- 35-45 gluten free saltine crackers such as Simple Mills or Schar
- 1 cup unsalted butter
- 1 cup brown sugar packed
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 ⅓ cups semi-sweet chocolate chips
- Optional toppings- holiday m&m's gluten free pretzels, faky sea salt, etc
Preheat your oven to 375 degrees F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
Place a single layer of saltine crackers on the parchment-lined baking sheet, ensuring they cover the entire surface.
In a medium saucepan, combine the unsalted butter and packed brown sugar over medium heat. Stir continuously until the butter is melted and the mixture starts to boil. Let it boil for 3-4 minutes without stirring, until it turns a rich, caramel-like color. Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract and continue mixing for 1 minute.
Carefully pour the hot toffee mixture over the Saltine crackers. Use an offset spatula to spread the toffee evenly, making sure each cracker is well-coated.
Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake for 4-6 minutes, or until the toffee is bubbly and golden brown. Watch it closely to prevent burning.
Remove from the oven and immediately sprinkle the semisweet chocolate chips over the hot toffee. Allow them to melt for a few minutes, then spread the melted chocolate evenly with a spatula. Can also melt the chocolate ahead of time in the microwave in 30-second increments and pour over the christmas crack toffee.
If desired, melt white chocolate chips and drizzle over the semi-sweet chocolate for a decorative touch.
While the chocolate is still soft, sprinkle toppings over the top for a festive finish.
Cut into squares while the candy recipe is still warm. Then allow the Christmas Crack to cool completely. You can speed up the process by placing it in the refrigerator for about 30 minutes. Enjoy!
