Air Fryer Sweet Potato Gnocchi
A homemade sweet potato gnocchi recipe is easier to make than you think! This air fryer sweet potato gnocchi is made with 2 simple ingredients, and is lower carb and healthier than traditional gnocchi.
The first time I ever heard about gnocchi was when trader joe’s cauliflower gnocchi was all anyone could ever talk about on social media. It was the best thing since sliced bread, or so everyone claimed.
Since I’m based in Canada I didn’t have access to the store-bought gnocchi. That’s when I decided it was time to make my own easy air fryer gnocchi recipe.
If pasta noodles are noods, and zucchini noodles are zoods, does that mean sweet potato noodles are swoods? And does that make sweet potato gnocchi – swocchi?
Whatever you wanna call em, THEY ARE DELICIOUS. Not to mention the main ingredient is a vegetable, so that’s a win in my books.

What is gnocchi you ask? Traditionally, gnocchi are small pasta dumplings made of wheat flour and potatoes.
I decided to fiddle with the recipe a little to create a gluten free and sweet potato version! I was inspired to create this recipe as it’s fall and I’m craving all the warm, comforting dishes lately.
If you are not a fan of sweet potato, I have also created a 2 Ingredient Cauliflower Gnocchi Recipe. IT IS TO DIE FOR!
I’ve also heard of pumpkin gnocchi served with sage butter sauce. There are lots of different flavors to test out.
If you’ve been following me for awhile you know that I’ve been avoiding gluten for about 3 months now to heal my gut. I haven’t had a super tough time with it other than craving pasta and pizza the odd time (let’s be real, those two things are never the same without the gluten).
I was bound and determined to create a gluten free “pasta” that was easy and didn’t require any big pasta making appliances.
You guys, this recipe is literally TWO ingredients. That’s all you need to make this pasta.
If that isn’t the definition of simple I don’t know what is. All you need is sweet potato, and cassava flour!
I haven’t tested this with other types of flours, however if you are not gluten intolerant I believe all purpose flour would work just fine! As for almond flour and coconut flour, I would NOT recommend with these measurements!
INGREDIENTS YOU NEED FOR HOMEMADE GNOCCHI
You will need the following ingredients listed below to make the copycat trader joe’s sweet potato gnocchi (the exact measurements are in the recipe card below):
- Sweet Potatoes
- Cassava Flour
HOW TO MAKE THE FRESH GNOCCHI
Preheat air fryer to 400F. If you’re using your oven the preheat oven to 425F.
Peel sweet potato, then chop into smaller pieces. Boil sweet potato until very tender. Drain water.
Add sweet potato and cassava flour to food processor and blend until everything is completely smooth. You can also mash the sweet potato and combine with flour by hand in a bowl.
On a floured surface, separate dough ball into four balls and roll out each ball into sausage like tubes. Cut the tubes of dough into 2cm pieces and press into the gnocchi pieces with back of a fork to make an indent.
Bring a large pot of water to boil and boil the gnocchi until they float to the top (approx 1 minute).
Remove from water using a slotted spoon and put in air fryer basket in a single layer. Drizzle with olive oil and fry for 10-12 minutes, then flip and fry for another 5-6 minutes.
If baking in oven, add to baking sheet and bake for 30 minutes, flipping half way through until golden brown.
Toss in favorite sauce and devour this air fryer sweet potato gnocchi! I love a white sage sauce, a tomato sauce or a marinara sauce.
Don’t forget the freshly grated parmesan cheese, garlic powder and black pepper.
NOTES FOR THE BEST SWEET POTATO GNOCCHI
- The dough should not be sticky and you should be able to roll it out easily! If the consistency is too sticky, add a little extra flour.
- Don’t add salt to gnocchi. This is unnecessary. Add salt to water when you are boiling the gnocchi and/or in whatever pasta sauce you choose to serve it with! That will be more than enough salt!
- The best way to store the air fryer sweet potato gnocchi is in an airtight container in the refrigerator.
- If you like crispy gnocchi and you don’t own an air fryer, fry them over medium heat in a large skillet after they’ve been boiled.
After whipping up this homemade pasta, you may feel like being a bit lazy and serving it with grocery store bought Alfredo sauce. After all, there’s truly nothing better than an easy dinner.
If you want a bit of extra flavor, spruce it up with spinach, onions, and garlic. Not going to lie, my favorite way to enjoy gnocchi is with plain old butter and my favorite seasonings.
I also think some sort of sweet maple brown butter sauce would be AMAZING for a sweeter option!
