Honestly I’m not going to lie to you guys, it took me a long time to acquire a taste for matcha flavor. Even if it was made the traditional way from a coffee shop, or by making my own latte at home, I never truly loved the flavors and felt like it had such an earthy flavor.

There is something different about a creamy vanilla matcha latte though. The first place to ever get me hooked on matcha was Starbucks, where I started to order one with coconut milk.

I think it does depend on the type of milk you use, as well as using higher quality matcha powder. The Costco stuff just doesn’t hit.

If you’re not a huge lover of matcha but want to slowly get into it I highly recommend starting with my Iced Strawberry Matcha Latte Recipe or my Iced Blueberry Matcha Latte Recipe.

WHAT IS MATCHA?

Matcha is a high-grade green tea ground into fine powder form. The green tea powder is whisked into hot water, instead of steeped, to form a frothy drink.

The meditative act of preparing, presenting, and sipping matcha is the backbone of the Japanese tea ceremony. While matcha’s origins are ceremonial, the green tea powder is widely popular around the world in beverages like tea lattes or boba tea, and as a cooking ingredient in everything from ice cream to salad dressing.

There are different grades of matcha, one being ceremonial and one being culinary. Ceremonial is classified as a higher grade and has a more vibrant green color.

INGREDIENTS FOR THE GREEN TEA LATTE

You will need the following ingredients listed below to make this cup of matcha (the exact measurements and full recipe are in the recipe card at the bottom of this post):

  • Matcha tea powder – ceremonial matcha is best but you can also use culinary grade matcha or any type of green tea powder.
  • Warm water
  • Almond milk – or any type of non-dairy milk such as oat milk, cashew milk, coconut milk, soy milk, or whole milk.
  • Vanilla syrup – I used a sugar-free vanilla syrup however you can also use a combination of maple syrup or agave nectar and vanilla extract.

HOW TO MAKE THE DELICIOUS MATCHA LATTE

Add the matcha and hot water to a small bowl or wide mug and whisk until frothy. If you have a bamboo whisk or small whisk it works well here.

Add the vanilla syrup and mix again.

Using a milk frother, froth your milk of choice. Pour frothed milk into the ceremonial grade matcha and enjoy!

WHAT ARE THE HEALTH BENEFITS OF MATCHA?

Matcha tea is very good for your health, as it’s high in antioxidants and may help heart and brain health. It may also help you lose weight.

Here are some of the main benefits to consuming a tsp matcha powder per day:

  • Matcha contains a concentrated amount of antioxidants, which may reduce cell damage and prevent chronic disease.
  • Could prevent liver damage and decrease the risk of liver disease.
  • Matcha has been shown to improve attention, memory, and reaction time. It also contains caffeine and L-theanine, which can improve several aspects of brain function.
  • May inhibit the growth of cancer cells.
  • Green tea and matcha can decrease several heart disease risk factors.
  • Green tea extract helps increase metabolism and fat burning, both of which may aid weight loss.

CAN I MAKE THIS INTO AN ICED VANILLA MATCHA LATTE?

Yes, if you want to make the iced version for those hot summer days you can make some easy swaps. First, you skip frothing your favorite milk and simply serve your matcha over ice cubes.

You can also use the cold froth feature on your milk frother if it has that feature.

CAN I STORE THIS MATCHA LATTE?

Unfortunately if you make this ahead of time it will get cold and lose it’s froth. You can store it in the refrigerator in a jar for up to 2-3 days and enjoy it over ice or reheat it for hot matcha lattes.
