Taco Bell Crunchwrap Supreme Recipe (Better Than the Drive-Through)

A Taco Bell Crunchwrap Supreme is a large flour tortilla filled with seasoned ground beef, queso dip, a crispy tostada shell, sour cream, shredded lettuce, diced tomatoes, and shredded cheese โ€” folded into a hexagonal shape and pan-seared until golden. Ready in 20 minutes and genuinely better than the original.

Taco Bell charged $5.79 for a Crunchwrap Supreme and I spent years paying it without question. Then I made one at home. That was a turning point.

Everything you love about the original is here โ€” the crispy tostada crunch in the middle, the warm seasoned beef, the cool sour cream and lettuce layer, the melty cheese โ€” all wrapped in a golden, toasted tortilla. You get to use real ingredients, control the portions, and make four of them for the price of one at the drive-through.

I’ve made these more times than I can count and worked out the tips that actually matter โ€” including the one about the tortilla that nobody tells you.

Why You’ll Love This Recipe

  • Better than Taco Bell โ€” fresh ingredients, proper portions, actual cheese.
  • 20 minutes start to finish โ€” faster than the drive-through line on a Friday night.
  • Completely customizable โ€” add jalapeรฑos, swap the protein, use refried beans, make it vegetarian. Do whatever you want.
  • Cheaper than takeout โ€” four crunchwraps at home for less than the price of two at the counter.

Ingredients You’ll Need

(Full measurements are in the recipe card below.)

  • Ground beef โ€” 80/20 gives the most flavour. Ground turkey or chicken work as leaner substitutes โ€” season a little more generously since they’re naturally less flavourful.
  • Taco seasoning โ€” a store-bought packet is perfectly fine and keeps this fast. Want to make your own? Combine chili powder, garlic powder, cumin, onion powder, paprika, salt, and pepper.
  • Large flour tortillas โ€” the largest ones you can find โ€” burrito size, at least 12 inches. Smaller tortillas won’t fold properly and you’ll end up with gaps. More on this in the tips section.
  • Queso dip โ€” store-bought is completely fine here. Tostitos queso, Velveeta queso, or any jarred nacho cheese sauce all work great. Warm it slightly before using so it spreads easily.
  • Tostada shells โ€” the crispy layer inside that gives the crunchwrap its signature crunch. Find them in the Mexican food aisle near the taco shells.
  • Sour cream โ€” spread directly onto the tostada shell. Full-fat for the best flavour. Light sour cream works too.
  • Shredded cheese โ€” Mexican blend or cheddar. Shred from a block if you can โ€” it melts better than the pre-shredded bags.
  • Diced tomatoes โ€” fresh roma tomatoes give the best texture. Drain any excess liquid before adding.
  • Shredded lettuce โ€” iceberg holds its crunch best. Add it cold โ€” warm lettuce goes soggy immediately.

How to Make a Taco Bell Crunchwrap Supreme

  1. Cook the beef. In a large skillet over medium-high heat, brown the ground beef, breaking it into small crumbles as it cooks โ€” about 7โ€“8 minutes. Drain excess grease. Add taco seasoning and water according to the packet directions. Stir to combine and simmer 2 minutes until the seasoning thickens slightly. Remove from heat.
  2. Prep the tortillas. The patch trick: Most stores only carry 10-inch tortillas which are too small to fold completely over the filling. Fix this by cutting a smaller circle from a second tortilla โ€” roughly the size of the tostada shell โ€” to use as a patch in the center before folding. This fills the gap and seals everything shut.
  3. Warm the tortillas. Microwave each large tortilla for 15โ€“20 seconds before assembling. Cold tortillas crack when folded. Warm tortillas are pliable and fold cleanly.
  4. Assemble. Lay a large tortilla flat on a clean surface. Add a scoop of taco beef to the center โ€” don’t spread it too wide or it’ll be impossible to fold. Pour a spoonful of warm queso over the beef. Place a tostada shell directly on top of the beef and queso. Spread sour cream over the tostada shell. Add the shredded lettuce, diced tomatoes, and shredded cheese on top of the sour cream. Place the small tortilla patch on top of everything.
  5. Fold. Starting at one edge, fold the large tortilla up and over the filling toward the centre. Work your way around, creating overlapping pleats โ€” like folding a hexagon. Each fold should overlap the previous one. Press the folds firmly so they hold.
  6. Cook seam-side down. Heat a dry skillet over medium heat. Place the crunchwrap fold-side down. Press down firmly with a spatula โ€” this is what seals the folds and creates an even golden crust. Cook for 2โ€“3 minutes until deep golden brown. Flip carefully and cook another 2โ€“3 minutes.
  7. Serve immediately. With hot sauce, sour cream, or salsa on the side.

Warm the tortilla first. This is the tip that changes everything. A cold tortilla will crack at every fold point. A warm tortilla is pliable enough to fold into a clean hexagon without tearing. 15 seconds in the microwave is all it takes.

Use the patch trick. If your tortilla is too small to fully cover the filling, cut a smaller circle from a second tortilla and lay it over the opening before folding. This is how you get a properly sealed crunchwrap without gaps.

Press while cooking. Pressing down firmly with a spatula while the crunchwrap cooks seam-side down is what seals the folds and gives you that even golden crust. Don’t skip it.

Don’t overfill. Too much filling = impossible to fold + fillings falling out everywhere when you try to eat it. The recipe amounts are calibrated to fit. Trust them.

Variations

  1. Vegetarian โ€” swap the ground beef for seasoned black beans or refried beans. Add extra cheese and avocado.
  2. Spicy โ€” add sliced pickled jalapeรฑos to the filling and use pepper jack cheese instead of cheddar.
  3. Chicken โ€” use ground chicken or shredded rotisserie chicken with taco seasoning.
  4. Extra loaded โ€” add a layer of refried beans under the beef and guacamole on top of the sour cream layer.

Store leftover assembled crunchwraps in the fridge for up to 2 days wrapped in foil. To reheat: place seam-side down in a dry skillet over medium heat for 2โ€“3 minutes per side until crispy again. Avoid the microwave โ€” it makes the tortilla soft and the tostada shell soggy. Better option: store the cooked beef separately for up to 5 days and assemble fresh crunchwraps whenever you want one.

Prep Time20 minutes
Cook Time10 minutes
Total Time30 minutes
Course: Beef
Cuisine: American
Servings: 4 servings
Calories: 400kcal

Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 package taco seasoning
  • 4 extra large flour tortillas
  • ยพ cup nacho cheese
  • 4 tostada shells
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 1 tomato diced
  • 2 cups shredded lettuce
  • 1 cup shredded cheese
  • 1 tbsp olive oil

Instructions

  • Using a large skillet, cook ground beef over medium heat until brown. Crumble the beef into smaller pieces as you go. This will take 4-5 minutes. Then add taco seasoning.
  • Place the flour tortilla on a flat surface. Add ground beef in the middle of the tortilla – about the size of the tostada shell. Then add nacho cheese overtop and spread evenly. Top with tostada shell.
  • Layer on the sour cream evenly. Then top with the diced tomato, shredded lettuce, and shredded cheese.
  • Tightly fold the edges of the large tortilla towards the center, creating pleats as you go. I have a video for this on my Instagram linked in this blog if you’d like to watch how it’s done.
  • In the same skillet, heat oil. Add crunch wrap seam-side down and cook until golden brown over medium heat. This should take 2-3 minutes. Flip over to other side and cook for another 1-2 minutes until golden brown.
  • Continue with the remaining 3 crunch wrap supremes and enjoy!

Notes

The tortillas I used were 105g.
Can use full fat greek yogurt instead of the sour cream for a higher protein option.
I used marble cheese but mozza works great too.
