Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy making homemade bread and buns, but sometimes I just don’t have the time to let the bread dough rise. With vegan beer bread, you don’t have to let the dough rise or use active dry yeast, you just mix everything together and toss it into the oven.

INGREDIENTS YOU NEED IN THIS 6-INGREDIENT BEER BREAD RECIPE

You will need the following ingredients listed below to make this sweet bread (the exact measurements and step by step instructions are in the recipe card at the bottom of this post)

  • All-purpose flour – gluten free flour works, however the bread will be much more dense.
  • Baking powder – omit if using self-rising flour
  • Sea salt
  • White sugar
  • Can of beer – or bottle of beer. Light beer works best for this recipe as oppose to dark beer.
  • Vegan butter

HOW TO MAKE THIS EASY BEER BREAD RECIPE

In 4 easy steps you can have yourself some insanely delicious homemade beer bread!

  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
  2. In a medium size bowl, mix together all the dry ingredients. Add in beer and combine with a rubber spatula.
  3. Pour into a greased bread loaf pan. Pour melted butter over the top of the loaf. This will create the golden brown crunchy crust.
  4. Bake 1 hour, remove from pan and cool for at least 15 minutes.

IS BEER VEGAN?

The short answer is yes! The four main ingredients in beer are water, a grain like barley or wheat, yeast, and hops — a flower that provides beer’s distinctive, bitter taste.

The yeast ferments and digests the sugar from the grain to produce alcohol. This easy beer bread is the perfect vegan treat!

fluffy and delicious vegan beer bread with no yeastI tried making this recipe with buckwheat flour in place of the all-purpose, and it turned out to be very dense bread. I mean, it was edible, but I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone.

You could try this with gluten free 1:1 all-purpose flour, I imagine that would be your best bet! If you test it out, let me know in the comments how it turns out!

WHAT TO SERVE WITH THE BEER BREAD?

  • Eat it as a snack with vegan butter or vegan cheese!
  • Slather peanut butter and jam on it!
  • I LOVE having a slice for breakfast with my favourite green smoothie recipe.
  • Homemade chili or soup makes the perfect companion for the homemade bread!

STORAGE

Storing homemade vegan beer bread properly will help maintain its freshness and taste. Follow these steps to store your bread effectively:

  1. Cooling: Allow the vegan beer bread to cool completely after baking. Placing it on a wire rack helps air circulate around the loaf and prevents moisture buildup.

  2. Wrap: Once cooled, wrap the bread tightly in plastic wrap or aluminum foil. Ensure the entire loaf is covered to retain moisture and prevent it from drying out.

  3. Airtight Container: Alternatively, you can place the wrapped bread in an airtight container. A resealable plastic container or a bread box works well for this purpose.

  4. Room Temperature: Store the wrapped or containerized vegan beer bread at room temperature. Avoid refrigerating the bread, as it can cause it to become dry and stale faster.

  5. Avoid Direct Sunlight: Store the bread away from direct sunlight and heat sources. Sunlight and heat can accelerate the staling process and affect the texture and taste of the bread.

  6. Consumption Timeline: Vegan beer bread is best enjoyed within the first 2-3 days after baking. As it doesn’t contain preservatives, its shelf life is shorter than store-bought bread.

  7. Freezing (Optional): If you have leftover vegan beer bread that you won’t consume within a few days, freezing is a great way to extend its shelf life.

    • Slice the bread and place individual slices in a resealable freezer bag or wrap them in plastic wrap.
    • Label the bag with the date to keep track of its freshness.
    • Store the bread in the freezer for up to 2-3 months.
    • Thaw individual slices as needed by letting them come to room temperature or lightly toasting them.

TIPS FOR MAKING YOUR OWN BREAD

  • This recipe makes a very hearty bread with a crunchy, buttery crust. If you prefer a softer crust (like a traditional bread) mix the butter into the batter instead of pouring it over the top of the bread.
  • SIFT YOUR FLOUR – Sifting flour for bread recipes is a must! The first few times I made this recipe I didn’t sift the flour, and it was still amazing, but WAY better when you sift the flour! Without sifting you are compacting the flour and will turn your bread into more of a “hard biscuit”. If you do not have a sifter, use a spoon to spoon the flour into the 1 cup measure. Try it once the “correct” way and you will see an amazing difference in the end product.
  • I kept this recipe vegan by using Earth Balance vegan butter. However, if you’re not vegan, you can definitely use regular butter.
  • When combining the ingredients, do not to over mix the batter. Use a rubber spatula or wooden spoon, not an electric mixer.
  • I have made this recipe with Coors Light and Old Milwaukee, but I think almost any kind of beer would work! I wouldn’t recommend using a beer that’s very dark with a strong flavour, or an IPA. Stick to lighter beers for a light and fluffy texture.
  • The final result should be a thick, hearty and very tasteful bread, NOT A BRICK! 😉

Just making thus bread wish me luck😰😉. What did you use to grease loaf pan? If adding cheese/chives do you add before adding the beer? Last question once everything combined what should the consistency be of the dough. Mine wasn’t smooth, did I over mix??? Thxs

    1. Hi Betty! I just use cooking spray! But you can use vegan butter or anything you have on hand. When adding the cheese and chives add it before the beer yes! And the dough will be very lumpy and thick! DO NOT over-mix as this will make the bread tougher! Just mix until everything is combined! Good luck!! 🙂

  2. So would non-alcoholic beer work?

    1. Hi Jen! Yes non alcoholic beer should work fine, as you are using the beer for the yeast!

  3. Hi there I tried this recipe this morning and it’s wonderful. Just a quick question omg ei got thinking about it after. I’ve heard in other recipes to have the beer be flat but yours never mentioned it so I didn’t. Just wanted to make sure that’s correct. Haha
Thanks again for sharing!!! Loved it I can wait to make more with added flavours 🙂 and gluten free flour for my celiac friends ❤️

    1. Hi Lindsay! Thank you so much for the comment and 5 star review! The beer does not need to be flat no! Let me know how it turns out gluten free, I tried it with buckwheat flour and it wasn’t great! I have had a few people try with all purpose 1:1 gluten free flour and said it was dense but not half bad!

  4. Is there any particular kind of sugar you should use?

    1. Hi Holly! I use granulated white sugar, but others have used honey in place and cane sugar and both came out beautifully!!

  5. Could you use bread flour instead of all purpose?

    1. Hi Corinne! I haven’t actually tested this recipe with bread flour but I think it will work great! May just have a slightly higher rise in the bread! Let me know if you test it out and what you think! 🙂

    1. Hi Cindy! Yes non alcoholic beer should work fine! You are using the beer because it contains yeast which helps the bread rise! Let me know if you try it and what you think! 🙂

  6. Sorry this might be a stupid question but would you know if this is okay for pregnant women? Would the alcohol cook off? I’m thinking non alcoholic beer might work because it’s the active hops that we’re looking for?

    1. Hi Ashley! I’m not 100% sure if the alcohol would cook off completely. Non alcoholic beer should work totally fine, to be on the safe side!

  7. Made it with whole wheat flour-tasted great! Thanks for the recipe 🙂 have been wanting to make bread in quarantine but found it very hard to get my hands on some yeast !

  8. I can’t wait to try this recipe! Do you think I could do half all purpose flour and half almond flour?

    1. This was amazing! I made a bunch of them yesterday for us and a few of our neighbors. I did 2 GF versions – one using Wendel’s flour (absorbed all the butter before I even baked it and came out like cardboard), the other using Cup4Cup Multipurpose Flour which was amazing, but is unfortunately not vegan. Cup4Cup has a GF bread flour which I will try next if I can get my hands on some! I used Bard’s GF beer and Earth Balance vegan butter and they were perfect.

    2. Hi Sasha! Thank you so much for the 5 star review and taking the time to leave a comment! AND testing all these different variations out!! I have also heard it works very well with Bobs 1:1 all purpose gluten free flour. The Cup4Cup bread flour will probably work amazing! So glad you enjoyed the recipe 🙂

  9. Just made this and it’s delicious! Really trying not to eat the whole loaf in one sitting…

    1. Honestly the biggest struggle with this recipe!! Thank you for taking the time to leave this comment and 5 star review 🙂

  10. Just made this delicious beer bread. My first time making bread ever! I added regular butter, cheese and some pickled jalapenos to mine. It tasted amazing! My husband had one bite and then quickly helped himself to another and made us a quick sandwich to enjoy. One mistake I made was used parchment paper and the bottom got stuck a bit.

    1. Hi Bianca! I’m so glad you two loved it! As fo the parchment paper – all you need is cooking spray and it comes out SO easily!! Try that next time! Thank you for the 5 star review 🙂

  11. OH MY GOSH this bread was so easy and fantastic!!! Made it for my husband and I and we ate half the loaf in one sitting! Thank you so much for this recipe I will be making this on repeat!!

    1. Hi Carla! I’m so happy to hear that!!!

  13. Christine says:

I’ve actually tried a similar recipe and used a dark beer (stout) instead and liked the flavor! It’s definitely a heavier flavor but if you enjoy beer, dark beers work too 🙂

    1. Thanks for the input! I may need to try this myself!

  14. This was SO easy and it is absolutely delicious. The crispy buttery crust is outstanding! Has anyone tried to make ahead and freeze? Did you slice it first? Want to send loaves back to college with my daughter. 5 star recipe!

    1. Hi Heather,

Thank you so much for the 5 star review!! I’m so happy to hear that! 🙂
