We can all agree that Birthday Breakfasts are fun, right? I mean, the earlier you start celebrating, the better, and b-day breakfast always means dessert for breakfast – enter birthday cake overnight oats.

Plus that early in the day it is unlikely that any servers will gather around your table to reluctantly sing “Happy Birthday”. WIN.

I have good news: It doesn’t have to be your birthday (or anyone’s birthday) to enjoy these healthy birthday cake overnight oats but you will still feel like you’ve started your day with something fun and unusual. They make for a special breakfast all year long and once you taste them, you’ll definitely be making them over and over again.

Happy breakfast to you, good ma’am or sir.

INGREDIENTS FOR MAKING BIRTHDAY CAKE OVERNIGHT OATS

You will need the following ingredients listed below to make this delicious breakfast (the exact measurements, nutritional information and full list of ingredients are in the printable recipe card at the bottom of the post):

  • gluten-free oats – I used old fashioned oats here. They are thicker and “heartier” and work well in overnight oat recipes. Can you make overnight oats with quick oats? Absolutely! I would avoid steel cut oats all together though.
  • I make my birthday cake oatmeal using unsweetened almond milk but any plant milk will do such as soy milk, oat milk or coconut milk.
  • vanilla extract and a little almond extract make these taste like breakfast birthday cake.
  • Cake pop protein powder adds that extra birthday cake flavor while turning these into high protein overnight oats, however you can also use vanilla protein powder.. My favorite protein powder on the market is PEScience. If you want to try out any of their products use my code “BAILEY” at checkout to save yourself money!
  • I like adding chia seeds to my overnight oats. They help thicken the mixture and also add some crunch and nutrition.
  • These oats are sweetened with honey. Add an additional teaspoon if you prefer sweeter oats for breakfast. For vegan, use real maple syrup.
  • Plain greek yogurt
  • rainbow sprinkles – Don’t add the sprinkles to the oatmeal until they have chilled. The color from the sprinkles can bleed into the oats if they are mixed in before the oatmeal has a chance to thicken.
  • Optional add ins – peanut butter, cashew butter, creamy almond butter, brown sugar, chocolate chips, flax seed, etc.

CAN YOU WARM UP OVERNIGHT OATS?

You can warm up any flavour of overnight oats. However, warming up the oats with the sprinkles already mixed in will make the colour of the sprinkles bleed into the oats once you mix them.

CAN YOU MAKE OVERNIGHT OATS WITH WATER ?

Yes, it is possible but they will not be that creamy. To still achieve a creamy consistency even without adding any milk, you could make overnight oats with a mix of water and yogurt as well as chia seeds or soak them in water and stir some yogurt into the oats in the morning.

CAN YOU FREEZE OVERNIGHT OATS?

Yes! Freezing overnight oats is a great way to increase their shelf life. Frozen overnight oats can last up to 6 months in theory. However, be aware that the taste, texture, and quality will be affected the longer it is frozen.I would try to eat them within 3 months.

WHAT IS THE BEST JAR FOR OVERNIGHT OATS?

This very much depends on your appetite and on how long you want to store them. Generally, I recommend getting small mason jars as they come with lids. Little 8 oz Mason jars work for a small serving of oats.

For a hearty portion made with ½ cup of oatmeal per serving, like this recipe, I recommend you use a 16 oz Mason jar to hold the oats. Or meal prep containers work great as well.
