Big Mac Sauce Recipe (Copycat, Ready in 5 Minutes)

This copycat Big Mac sauce recipe is a creamy, tangy, slightly sweet special sauce made with mayonnaise, sweet pickle relish, yellow mustard, white vinegar, garlic powder, onion powder, and paprika โ€” ready in 5 minutes and genuinely better than what comes on the actual burger.

Let’s be honest. The Big Mac is fine. The sauce is the entire point.

This copycat Big Mac sauce is made with seven pantry ingredients, takes 5 minutes to mix, and tastes exactly like the real thing โ€” possibly better, because you can make it however you want and you know every ingredient in it. It’s the sauce that makes smash burgers worth making, Big Mac bowls worth eating, and fries worth dunking.

I’ve also included a Greek yogurt swap that boosts the protein and keeps it lighter without changing the flavour in any noticeable way โ€” which no other Big Mac sauce recipe online does. You’re welcome.

Use it on my Big Mac Crunchwrap or my Viral Big Mac Smash Burger Tacos.

Ingredients You’ll Need

(Full measurements are in the recipe card below.)

  • Paprika โ€” gives the sauce its signature light orange hue and a very subtle smokiness. Regular paprika, not smoked.
  • Mayonnaise โ€” the creamy base. Use real mayonnaise โ€” not Miracle Whip, not light mayo from a budget brand. The quality of the mayo is the single biggest factor in how good this sauce tastes. Hellmann’s or Duke’s are both excellent. High protein swap: replace mayo with plain Greek yogurt for a lighter, higher-protein version that tastes almost identical.
  • Sweet pickle relish โ€” adds sweetness, tang, and that signature chunky texture. Sweet relish is correct here โ€” don’t swap for dill relish or the flavour balance changes significantly.
  • Yellow mustard โ€” the tangy backbone. Just regular yellow mustard, not Dijon. Dijon is too sharp and changes the flavour.
  • White vinegar โ€” a tiny amount adds brightness and the subtle tang that separates this from regular burger sauce. Don’t skip it โ€” it’s what makes this taste specifically like Big Mac sauce and not just a mayo-based condiment.
  • Garlic powder โ€” depth and savouriness. Don’t use fresh garlic โ€” it’s too sharp for this sauce.
  • Onion powder โ€” rounds out the flavour. Same rule as garlic โ€” powder only.

How to Make Big Mac Sauce

  1. Combine everything. In a small bowl, add the mayonnaise (or Greek yogurt), sweet pickle relish, yellow mustard, white vinegar, garlic powder, onion powder, and paprika.
  2. Stir until smooth. Mix with a spoon or spatula until completely combined and the paprika is fully incorporated โ€” no orange streaks remaining.
  3. Refrigerate before serving. Cover the bowl and refrigerate for at least 2โ€“3 hours. Overnight is even better. This is the most important step โ€” the flavours need time to meld together. Sauce made and served immediately tastes flat. Sauce made the night before tastes like the real thing.

The ratios matter more than the ingredients. Big Mac sauce is not hard to make but it IS easy to get wrong by adding too much mustard or too much vinegar. Follow the recipe amounts exactly the first time, then adjust from there based on your preference.

Chill it properly. The difference between chilled-overnight sauce and just-made sauce is significant. If you can only wait 2 hours, the flavour will be decent. If you chill overnight, it’s genuinely excellent. Plan ahead.

Greek yogurt works. If you swap mayonnaise for plain Greek yogurt the sauce is lighter, higher in protein, and tastes almost identical. This is Bailey’s twist โ€” use 0% or 2% plain Greek yogurt, same amount as the mayo.

What to Use Big Mac Sauce On

Once you have a jar of this in your fridge you’ll find excuses to put it on everything:

  • Burgers โ€” obviously. Spread generously on both buns.
  • Smash burger tacos โ€” the pairing that got Bailey’s sauce recipe on the map
  • Big Mac bowls or salad โ€” use it as a salad dressing, thinned with a splash of water
  • French fries โ€” easily the best dipping sauce for fries that exists
  • Chicken nuggets or tenders โ€” better than any fast food dipping sauce
  • Wraps and sandwiches โ€” wherever you’d use mayo or special sauce
  • Crunchwrap โ€” try it on the Big Mac Crunchwrap for the full experience
  • Onion rings โ€” don’t knock it until you try it

Variations

  1. Spicy Big Mac sauce โ€” add a few dashes of hot sauce or a pinch of cayenne to the base recipe. Start small and build up.
  2. Smoky version โ€” swap regular paprika for smoked paprika. Adds a BBQ-adjacent depth.
  3. Sugar-free โ€” the recipe as written has minimal sugar from the relish. For a stricter low-sugar version, use sugar-free sweet relish.
  4. Extra tangy โ€” double the white vinegar. More acidic, brighter, cuts through rich burgers really well.

Store in an airtight container or jar in the fridge for up to 2 weeks. The sauce actually improves over the first 2โ€“3 days as the flavours continue to develop. Give it a quick stir before using as it can separate slightly. Do not freeze.
