Frozen Tilapia in the Air Fryer (34g Protein, 14 Minutes)
Frozen tilapia fillets cooked straight from the freezer in the air fryer โ seasoned with garlic, paprika, and lemon, done in 12โ15 minutes, and 34 grams of protein per serving. The weeknight dinner that requires almost no effort and somehow always works.

Tilapia is the fish I keep in my freezer at all times because it goes from frozen to a fully seasoned dinner in about 14 minutes in the air fryer and hits 34 grams of protein per fillet at only 170 calories. No thawing required.
The air fryer gets the outside lightly golden and the inside flaky without any of the mess or smell that comes with pan frying fish, and the mild flavor means it takes on whatever seasoning you put on it โ which is part of why I love it as a weeknight protein.
I make it most often with the garlic-paprika blend below, but I’ll walk you through five different seasoning variations depending on what you’re in the mood for.

Ingredients
The recipe card below has exact measurements โ here’s what you need and why each one matters:
- Frozen tilapia fillets โ any brand works. Individually wrapped fillets from Walmart, Costco, or any grocery store frozen section. Don’t thaw them first.
- Olive oil spray or avocado oil spray โ a light spray over the fillet helps the seasoning adhere and the outside crisp up. Don’t skip this.
- Garlic powder โ goes on every piece of fish I cook because it adds savory depth without overpowering the mild tilapia flavor.
- Onion powder โ rounds out the garlic and adds another layer of savory flavor.
- Paprika โ gives the fillet a warm color and a slightly smoky flavor. Smoked paprika is an upgrade if you have it.
- Sea salt and black pepper โ season generously. Fish needs more salt than you think.
- Lemon wedge or lemon juice โ a squeeze of fresh lemon over the cooked fillet right before serving brightens everything and cuts through the mild fish flavor. Do not skip this step.
- Optional: cayenne for heat, dried dill for a more classic fish flavor, parmesan cheese pressed onto the top for a crusted finish, or a drizzle of melted butter added in the last 2 minutes.

How to Make Frozen Tilapia in the Air Fryer
Step 1. Preheat your air fryer to 375ยฐF for 3โ5 minutes. Starting with a fully preheated air fryer means the fish starts cooking immediately rather than slowly coming up to temperature โ better texture on the outside.
Step 2. Quick rinse (optional but recommended). Run the frozen fillets under cold water for 20โ30 seconds to remove the ice glaze. Pat dry with paper towel. This step helps the seasoning actually stick to the fish instead of sliding off the icy surface. Worth the extra 60 seconds.
Step 3. Spray the basket lightly with cooking spray, then place the fillets in a single layer. No overlapping โ the air needs to circulate around each piece.
Step 4. Spray the top of the fillets with a light coating of olive oil or avocado oil spray, then season generously with the garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, salt, and pepper. Add a thin lemon slice on top of each fillet if you want an extra hit of brightness while it cooks.
Step 5. Air fry at 375ยฐF for 12โ15 minutes, flipping at the halfway mark (6โ7 minutes). The tilapia is done when the flesh is opaque throughout and flakes easily when pressed with a fork. Internal temperature should read 145ยฐF.
Step 6. Squeeze fresh lemon over the fillets the moment they come out. Serve immediately.
Timing note: Fillet thickness varies. Thinner fillets (under ยฝ inch) may be done at 10โ12 minutes. Thicker fillets need the full 14โ15. Check at 12 minutes and add time if needed โ you’re looking for opaque flesh that flakes apart easily with a fork.

Seasoning Variations
The base recipe uses garlic-paprika but tilapia is mild enough to work with almost any seasoning profile. These are the five I make most often:
- Cajun โ replace the paprika and onion powder with 1 teaspoon of Cajun seasoning, add a pinch of cayenne if you want heat. Bold, smoky, and one of the best versions on this list.
- Lemon herb โ garlic powder, dried dill, dried parsley, salt, pepper, and a heavy squeeze of lemon juice over the raw fillet before cooking. Bright and classic โ the one I make when I’m serving it over a salad.
- Parmesan crusted โ mix 2 tablespoons of grated parmesan with the base seasoning, press it gently onto the oiled fillet before it goes in. The parmesan forms a golden crust on top that looks and tastes significantly more impressive than the effort required.
- Blackened โ smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, cayenne, dried thyme, salt, pepper. Generous coating, high heat on the air fryer (400ยฐF), and you get a deeply spiced exterior. This is the version I use when I’m making fish tacos.
- Butter garlic โ season the fillet plain, then add a thin slice of butter on top in the last 2 minutes of cooking. It melts into the fish and bastes it as it finishes. Simple and really good.
What to Serve With Air Fryer Tilapia
- Fish tacos โ slice the cooked fillet into pieces and tuck into warm corn tortillas with shredded cabbage, sliced avocado, and a drizzle of creamy sauce. This is the most popular way I serve these and the combination is genuinely great. Full fish taco recipe here.
- Over rice โ jasmine rice or cauliflower rice with the tilapia on top, a squeeze of lemon, and whatever sauce you have on hand. The easiest complete meal version.
- With roasted vegetables โ air fryer frozen veggies cook at the same temperature and take about the same time โ run the vegetables first, then the fish. Dinner done in under 25 minutes total.
- Over a salad โ the lemon herb variation works especially well here. Flake the cooked tilapia over mixed greens with cucumber, cherry tomatoes, and a light dressing.
- With a dipping sauce โ tartar sauce, sriracha mayo, or a simple garlic butter are all good options if you want something beyond the squeeze of lemon.

Storage and Reheating
Store leftover tilapia in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. Place a paper towel in the container to absorb excess moisture โ this is the single best thing you can do to keep the texture from going watery.
To reheat and get the edges crispy again: air fryer at 350ยฐF for 3โ4 minutes. Don’t microwave it โ the texture goes rubbery and the fish smell gets worse. The air fryer reheated version is genuinely good.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long do you cook frozen tilapia in the air fryer? Cook frozen tilapia at 375ยฐF for 12โ15 minutes, flipping halfway through at the 6โ7 minute mark. Thinner fillets (under ยฝ inch) may be done closer to 10โ12 minutes. The fish is done when the flesh is fully opaque and flakes easily when pressed with a fork, or when an internal thermometer reads 145ยฐF. Air fryer models vary โ check at 12 minutes your first time and adjust from there.
Do you have to thaw tilapia before air frying? No โ go straight from the freezer. Thawing is not required and skipping it actually saves you the most time. The only optional step is a quick 20โ30 second rinse under cold water to remove the ice glaze, which helps the seasoning stick better to the surface. Pat dry after rinsing, season, and straight into the basket.
What temperature do you air fry frozen tilapia? 375ยฐF is the sweet spot for frozen tilapia fillets โ hot enough to get the outside slightly golden and the inside fully cooked through, without drying out the flesh the way 400ยฐF can. If your air fryer runs on the cooler side, go up to 380ยฐF and add 1โ2 minutes.
Can I use a different white fish instead of tilapia? Yes โ this method works for any thin, mild white fish fillet. Cod, haddock, flounder, mahi mahi, and halibut all work using the same seasoning and temperature. Thicker fillets like halibut may need an extra 3โ5 minutes. The fish is done when it flakes easily at the thickest point.
