Air Fryer Chicken Sausage (Crispy, Juicy, 10 Minutes)

Air fryer chicken sausage links cook in 8โ€“10 minutes at 375ยฐF โ€” crispy on the outside, perfectly juicy on the inside, with zero mess and no oil required. Works with any brand, any flavour, precooked or uncooked.

The air fryer does something to chicken sausage that no other cooking method really replicates.

The outside gets this golden, slightly blistered crust while the inside stays completely juicy โ€” and it’s done in 10 minutes. Which is less time than it takes to preheat a pan, wait for it to get hot enough, and then stand over it babysitting the sausages.

I’ve tested this with Aidells, Applegate, Trader Joe’s, and Amylu. They all work. The method is the same. The result is consistently better than stovetop.

Ingredients You’ll Need

(Full measurements are in the recipe card below.)

  • Chicken sausage links โ€” any brand, any flavour. Most store-bought chicken sausages are precooked โ€” check the label. My go-to brands: Aidells (garlic herb and chicken apple are both excellent), Applegate (clean ingredients, organic), and Trader Joe’s (great variety, budget-friendly). Bilinski’s and Amylu are also solid picks. Italian, apple maple, spicy, sun-dried tomato โ€” whatever sounds good is what you should use.
  • Avocado oil spray โ€” a light spritz before cooking is what takes the exterior from pale to properly golden and crispy. Olive oil spray works just as well. Don’t saturate the sausages โ€” one quick spray on each side is enough.
  • Optional seasonings โ€” garlic powder, paprika, or dried herbs sprinkled on top before cooking. The sausages are already seasoned so this is purely optional โ€” do it if you want extra flavour on the exterior.

How to Make Air Fryer Chicken Sausage

  1. Preheat the air fryer to 375ยฐF for 3โ€“4 minutes.
  2. Arrange sausages in a single layer in the air fryer basket. Don’t stack or overlap โ€” the hot air needs to circulate around each sausage to get that crispy exterior.
  3. Lightly spray with oil on all sides.
  4. Air fry for 8โ€“10 minutes, flipping halfway through. The sausages are done when the exterior is golden brown and the internal temperature reads 165ยฐF on a meat thermometer.
  5. Rest for 2 minutes before serving โ€” this keeps the juices inside.

Precooked vs Uncooked vs Frozen โ€” Cook Times

TypeTemperatureTimeNotes
Precooked links375ยฐF8โ€“10 minutesFlip halfway. Most store-bought chicken sausage is precooked โ€” check the label.
Uncooked links375ยฐF12โ€“15 minutesPoke 3โ€“4 small holes with a knife before cooking to prevent bursting. Flip halfway. Always check 165ยฐF internal temp.
Frozen links375ยฐF10โ€“13 minutesNo thawing needed. Add 2โ€“3 minutes to the precooked time. Flip halfway.

Don’t prick precooked sausages. Poking holes in precooked sausage links releases the juices and you end up with dry sausage. Only poke holes if you’re cooking uncooked raw links โ€” this prevents them from bursting as they cook.

Single layer every time. This is non-negotiable. Stacked sausages steam each other instead of crisping. If your basket is small, cook in batches โ€” the wait is worth it.

Oil spray = crispy exterior. You don’t need much โ€” just a light spritz on each side before cooking. Skip it and the sausages cook fine but won’t get that satisfying golden crust.

Use a meat thermometer for uncooked sausage. 165ยฐF is the safe internal temperature for all chicken products. The colour outside doesn’t tell you if the inside is cooked โ€” the thermometer does.

What to Serve With Air Fryer Chicken Sausage

  • Peppers and onions โ€” slice them and throw them in the air fryer with the sausages for a one-basket meal. Cook everything together at 375ยฐF for 10 minutes, shaking halfway.
  • Roasted veggies โ€” broccoli, zucchini, asparagus, or green beans alongside make a complete dinner in under 15 minutes.
  • Eggs and toast โ€” slice the sausage and serve with scrambled or fried eggs for the best high-protein breakfast.
  • Rice or pasta โ€” slice and toss through a simple pasta with olive oil and garlic, or serve over rice with sautรฉed veggies.
  • In a bun โ€” with mustard, sauerkraut, and pickled onions. The classic reason sausages exist.
  • Chopped into a salad โ€” cold leftover chicken sausage sliced and added to a Caesar or grain bowl is genuinely excellent.

Store leftover sausages in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 days. To reheat: air fry at 350ยฐF for 3โ€“4 minutes until warmed through and crispy again. Avoid the microwave โ€” it makes the casing rubbery and the exterior soft. Cooked chicken sausage can also be frozen for up to 3 months โ€” freeze in a single layer on a baking sheet first, then transfer to a zip-lock bag.

Servings: 4 chicken sausages

Ingredients

  • 4 chicken sausages
  • Avocado oil cooking spray

Instructions

  • Preheat your air fryer to 375 degrees F (190ยฐC) for a few minutes. This ensures a hot cooking environment, resulting in a crispy exterior and juicy interior.
  • Start by selecting your preferred chicken sausage flavor. Prick the sausages with a fork a few times to allow any excess moisture to escape during cooking. This helps prevent them from bursting.
  • Lightly spray the sausages with olive oil or your preferred cooking oil. This will help them achieve a crispy texture and prevent them from sticking to the air fryer basket.
  • Place the chicken sausages in a single layer inside the air fryer basket. Avoid overcrowding to ensure even cooking.
  • Air fry chicken sausages for approximately 12-16 minutes. However, cooking times may vary depending on the size and thickness of the sausages, as well as the specific air fryer model.
  • Halfway through the cooking process, flip the sausages using tongs to ensure even browning on all sides.
  • Once the chicken sausages are cooked to perfection, carefully remove them from the air fryer basket.
  • Serve the crispy chicken sausages on a plate or in a bun, alongside your favorite accompaniments like mustard, sautรฉed onions, or a side salad.
