Dare I say it, but these brownies taste exactly like boxed brownies. The ones with 1700 grams of sugar in them, but you die a little inside with every bite because they’re just that good.

Well these fudgy brownies are basically identical just with better-for-you ingredients so you still feel good after eating them. They really do put regular brownies to shame, and still have the perfect crackly top.

These are so soft and fudgy, chewy along the edges, and seriously melt in your mouth! They are a great recipe when you need a dairy-free option and don’t have a gluten free brownie mix on hand.

WHAT ARE TRADITIONAL BROWNIES?

Traditional brownies are a type of American dessert that are typically made from a combination of butter, sugar, chocolate, eggs, and flour. They are baked in a rectangular metal pan and cut into squares or rectangles for serving.

Traditional brownies are often characterized by their fudgy texture and rich chocolate flavor. The original recipe is usually made with unsweetened chocolate or cocoa powder, which gives them their intense chocolate flavor.

While there are many variations on the traditional brownie recipe, some common additions include nuts, such as walnuts or pecans, and chocolate chips or chunks. Some recipes may also include frosting or glaze to add an extra layer of sweetness.

Brownies are a popular dessert in the United States and are often served at parties, potlucks, and other gatherings. They are also commonly enjoyed as a sweet treat at home, either warm and gooey straight from the oven or chilled in the refrigerator.

INGREDIENTS YOU WILL NEED FOR THE PERFECT BROWNIE

You will need the following ingredients listed below to make the best gluten-free brownie recipe (the exact measurements and full recipe are in the recipe card at the bottom of the post):

  • Vegan Butter – regular butter also works great but they will no longer be dairy-free.
  • Granulated Sugar – you can try coconut sugar as well, but you will most likely need more of it.
  • Eggs
  • Vanilla Extract

DIRECTIONS ON HOW TO MAKE

Preheat the oven to 350°F. Grease and line an 8×8 or 9×9 baking dish with parchment paper and set aside.

In a saucepan, melt the butter over low-medium heat. Add in sugar slowly and whisk continuously (this step is very important as it helps melt the sugar, which will give the brownies a the flakey crackly crust on the top).

Continue whisking for approx 1-2 minutes after all the sugar has dissolved.

Transfer the butter mixture over to a large bowl and let cool slightly. Add in eggs one at a time, whisking vigorously between each egg, then add the vanilla.

In a separate bowl, sift the cocoa powder, gluten free flour, baking powder and salt.

Bake for 25-30 minutes, ensuring you do not over bake.

Remove from the oven and cool for about 15 minutes before cutting. Once the brownies are cool, cut them up and devour!

DIFFERENT VARIATIONS FOR THE GLUTEN FREE DESSERT

  1. Add chunks of your favourite chocolate candy bar to the mix. Chop up 1 large candy bar into small pieces and add them to your brownie mix, I love adding Skor pieces, or Reeses Peanut Butter Cups.
  2. Add chopped nuts to your brownie mix. Chop up some nuts with a knife or a food processor and add them to your mix before baking. I LOVE adding in raw unsalted almonds to my brownies!
  3. Top the brownies with frosting. After your brownies are done baking, and have cooled a little, add your favourite frosting to the top. This will hide the beautiful flakey crust on top we worked so hard to achieve, but it really does make them taste EVEN better!
  4. Make cheesecake brownies. Swirl in some cream cheese to the mix! BOOM!

TIPS AND TRICKS

If you’re looking to make the best gluten-free fudge brownies, there are a few tips and tricks that can help you achieve the perfect texture and flavor. Here are some tips to keep in mind:

  1. Use a high-quality gluten-free flour blend: Not all gluten-free flours are created equal. Look for a gluten-free flour blend that contains xanthan gum, which helps to give the brownies structure and prevent them from crumbling.

  2. Melt the butter before adding it to the sugar: Melted butter distributes more evenly throughout the batter and results in a smoother texture.

  3. Don’t overmix the batter: Overmixing can lead to tough, dry brownies. Mix the ingredients until just combined.

  4. Use room temperature eggs: Room temperature eggs incorporate more easily into the batter and help to create a fudgier texture.

  5. Bake for the right amount of time: Gluten-free brownies can be a bit trickier to bake than regular brownies, as they can dry out more easily. Check the brownies at the minimum recommended baking time and then continue baking if needed.

  6. Let the brownies cool completely before cutting: Gluten-free brownies can be more delicate than regular brownies, so it’s important to let them cool completely before cutting to prevent them from falling apart.
  7. Add in chocolate chips or chunks: Adding chocolate chips or chunks to the batter will create pockets of melted chocolate throughout the brownies, making them even more indulgent.

STORING THE GLUTEN-FREE CHOCOLATE FUDGE BROWNIES

  1. Room Temperature: If you plan to eat the brownies within a day or two, you can store them at room temperature. Place them in an airtight container or cover them tightly with plastic wrap to prevent your gf brownies from drying out.

  2. Refrigerator: If you want to keep your brownies for a longer period, you can store them in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. Again, make sure to store them in an airtight container to prevent them from drying out.

  3. Freezer: If you want to store your brownies for an even longer period, you can freeze them for up to 3 months. Cut the brownies into squares and wrap them individually with plastic wrap. Then, place the wrapped brownies in an airtight container or freezer bag. Thaw the brownies in the refrigerator or at room temperature before serving.

  4. Tips: To prevent the brownies from becoming dry or stale, make sure to store them in an airtight container or wrap them tightly in plastic wrap. You can also place a piece of bread or a slice of apple in the container with the brownies to help keep them moist.

  1. Okay..these brownies were amazing! Made them for Easter dinner dessert and the fam was very impressed. I only had a 13×9 pan so I increased the recipe by 33% and it was perfect! Baked for the same amount of time and you BET I added Reese’s cups on top.

    1. Hi Marisa,

Thank you so much for the 5 star review and kind words!! So glad your family loved them!! 🙂

  2. Shantelle says:

Can I use coconut sugar instead of white sugar?

    1. Hi Shantelle,

Yes you should be able to! Coconut sugar is not as sweet as white sugar so you may need to use a bit more!

  3. Mary McClelland says:

What do you think would happen if you made these with oat flour or regular flour? They look delicious!

    1. Hi Mary!

Regular flour would be totally fine! Oat flour I’m not too sure about as I haven’t tested the recipe with it! Let me know if you try them out! 🙂

  4. I was just wondering how long can these be stored for?

    1. Hi Anya,

They will be good for up to a week! Any longer and I would suggest freezing them so they stay tasting fresh! 🙂

  5. Thx for recommending a brand of GF flour. Bob’s Red Mill has 2 choices: “1 to 1” GF flour and “All Purpose” GF flour. Which do you prefer for brownies?

    1. Hi Alice,

I typically use the 1 to 1 gf flour for most of my recipes. If the grocery store is out I’ve purchased the all purpose and it’s worked great too! Either or will do the trick 🙂

  6. Hi. Can I sub coconut oil for the butter? I use a refined organic one that has no aftertaste

    1. Hi Ana,

I have not tried that substitution so I can’t say for certain. It should work fine though!

  7. Awesome recipe! Just made this today and poured the batter into muffin paper cups. The texture is very nice and the flavor is rich but not overly sweet. I did not add chocolate chips or any nuts this time but I will try adding them next time. I will be making these again! Thank you for sharing.
