I love starting my morning with a smoothie. I am always one to have a sweet tooth, so smoothies are a great way to satisfy my sweet tooth with something a little healthier.

They’re a great way to start the day because they are filling, delicious, and often better for you than traditional high carb/sugar breakfasts!

This creamy smoothie comes together in just a few minutes with only a few ingredients and its so good that you’ll want it every day for breakfast or dessert!

This smoothie tastes totally decadent, and I was almost tempted to call it a healthy peanut butter cup milkshake (which explains the whipped cream and chocolate shavings), but I like to think that calling it a smoothie makes it a perfectly acceptable breakfast option.

INGREDIENTS YOU WILL NEED FOR THIS DELICIOUS SMOOTHIE

You will need the following ingredients listed below to make the chocolate protein smoothie (the exact measurements, nutrition information and full recipe are in the printable recipe card at the bottom of this post):

  • Frozen banana – a ripe banana will also work but you may need to add ice to make it thicker.
  • Unsweetened cocoa powder
  • Creamy peanut butter – almond butter, cashew butter, or any other nut butter will work as a replacement.
  • Chocolate protein powder – I prefer using whey protein powder, but a plant-based protein powder, organic pea protein, or vegan protein powder work great as well.
  • Unsweetned almond milk – soy milk, cashew milk, regular milk, or any non-dairy milk works.
  • Millenia Superfood Tea Cube (optional for added antioxidants – use code BAILEY20 for 20% off your purchase)

  2. Once combined, add in chocolate protein powder and blend until just combined. If you want the smoothie thinner, add more almond milk.
  3. Serve with coconut yogurt, melted chocolate, chocolate chips, or more peanut butter!

HEALTH BENEFITS OF THIS CHOCOLATE SMOOTHIE

The Chocolate Peanut Butter Protein Shake offers numerous health benefits, making it more than just a tasty treat. Here are some of the health benefits of enjoying this delicious smoothie:

  1. High Protein Content: The shake’s primary ingredient is a scoop of chocolate protein powder, which provides an additional 25 grams of protein. Protein is essential for muscle repair and growth, making this shake an excellent choice for post-workout recovery.
  2. Nutrient-Rich Ingredients: The shake contains healthy ingredients like bananas, peanut butter, and cocoa powder. Bananas are a good source of potassium and fiber, while peanut butter provides healthy fats, protein, and essential vitamins and minerals. Cocoa powder is rich in antioxidants and may have heart-healthy benefits.
  3. Energy Boost: With a combination of carbohydrates, protein, and healthy fats, this shake provides a sustainable energy boost. It can be an excellent option for a pre-workout snack or a midday pick-me-up when energy levels are running low.
  4. Satiety and Weight Management: The protein and fiber content in the shake can help promote a feeling of fullness and satiety. Including protein-rich foods in your diet can aid in weight management by reducing overall calorie intake and curbing unnecessary snacking.
  5. Bone Health: Some protein powders used in the shake may contain calcium, which contributes to bone health. Additionally, peanut butter contains magnesium, another essential mineral for bone health.

DELICIOUS TOPPINGS FOR YOUR SMOOTHIE

This chocolate peanut butter banana smoothie is so delicious! It’s one of my favourite smoothies to drink, and it would also be delicious as a smoothie bowl! If you want to make this smoothie into a bowl, some yummy topping ideas for your smoothie bowl are:

  • Granola
  • Peanut Butter
  • Greek yogurt
  • Sliced Bananas
  • Flax seeds, chia seeds, hemp hearts
  • Shredded coconut
  • Berries such as strawberries, blueberries or raspberries

Note that the sweetness of this smoothie comes from the ripeness of the bananas so be sure to use some that are well ripened. If you still would like it a little bit sweeter you could add in a little honey or cut back a touch on the cocoa powder.

This is one creamy, protein rich smoothie you are going to love!

IS THIS SHAKE A MEAL REPLACEMENT?

While the Chocolate Peanut Butter Protein Shake is nutrient-dense, it may not provide a complete balance of all essential nutrients required for a full meal. It’s best enjoyed as a snack or a part of a balanced meal plan.

IS THIS SUITABLE FOR A POST WORKOUT SNACK?

Yes, the Chocolate Peanut Butter Protein Shake is an excellent choice for a post-workout snack. It contains protein from the chocolate protein powder and healthy fats from the peanut butter, which can help with muscle recovery and replenish energy after exercising.

CAN I MAKE THIS WITHOUT PROTEIN POWDER?

Yes, you can omit the protein powder if you prefer. However, keep in mind that the protein powder contributes to the shake’s protein content, making it a more satisfying post-workout option. Without the protein powder, the shake will still be delicious, but it will not be a great source of protein.
