WHAT IS KOREAN DALGONA COFFEE?
Dalgona coffee is a trendy coffee beverage made by whipping together instant coffee, sugar, and hot water until it becomes a fluffy, frothy mixture. This froth is then served over milk, creating a visually striking and delicious coffee drink.
BASIC INGREDIENTS YOU NEED FOR THE DALGONA COFFEE RECIPE
You will need the following ingredients listed below to make the tiktok coffee (the exact measurements, nutrition information and full recipe are in the printable recipe card at the bottom of this post):
- Instant coffee crystals
- White granulated sugar – coconut sugar or a sugar substitute will also work.
- Water
- Unsweetened almond milk – or plant-based milk of choice such as oat milk, soy milk, coconut milk, cashew milk, or whole milk.
HOW TO MAKE THE WHIPPED COFFEE RECIPE
- In a mixing bowl, combine the instant coffee and sugar.
- Add the water and stir the ingredients together.
- Use an electric hand mixer to whip the coffee for approximately 5 minutes, until it’s doubled in size (see photos above for reference).
- Fill a 16 ounce cup with ice cubes annd a cold milk alternative. I also added a splash of vanilla almond milk creamer to mine. Top it with the fluffy coffee. I don’t always use all the coffee, this can make 1-2 portions depending on how strong you like your coffee!
- Use up the coffee mixture within an hour or two as it will slowly turn back into liquid form overtime!
HOW TO STORE
While Dalgona coffee is best enjoyed freshly whipped for its signature frothiness, you can store any leftover whipped coffee mixture for a short period if needed. Here’s how:
-
Transfer to an Airtight Container: If you have extra whipped coffee mixture, transfer it to an airtight container with a lid. This will help prevent the mixture from drying out and losing its texture.
-
Re-Whip Before Use: Before using the leftover whipped coffee mixture, give it a quick re-whip. The texture may change slightly during storage, so re-whipping will help restore its fluffy consistency.
-
Use Within a Few Hours: The whipped coffee mixture is best used within a few hours of whipping. It tends to lose its frothiness over time, so try to enjoy it as soon as possible after whipping.
-
Avoid Refrigeration: It’s not recommended to refrigerate the whipped coffee mixture, as it can cause it to separate and lose its airy texture. Instead, store it at room temperature.
-
Mindful of Moisture: Keep the airtight container away from moisture and humidity, as excess moisture can affect the texture of the whipped coffee.
HOW DO YOU DRINK THE CREAMY WHIPPED COFFEE?
The trick to drinking this coffee is mixing the fluff in with all the milk before drinking. I mix it all in with a straw or spoon, then drink it through a straw and it’s amazing.
If you try and drink the fluff straight from a mug it will taste bitter and strong, and I can pretty much guarantee you won’t enjoy it.
CAN I MAKE THIS WITH DECAF COFFEE?
Yes, you can definitely make Dalgona coffee with decaffeinated instant coffee. The process and method remain the same, giving you a decaffeinated version of this popular beverage.
CAN I SUBSTITUTE OTHER TYPES OF SUGAR?
Yes! I personally have not tested any other types of sugar because I don’t have any on hand. But I have seen people all over social media make it with white sugar, brown sugar, coconut sugar, cane sugar, and monk fruit sweetener!
DO I HAVE TO ADD SUGAR TO THE WHIP?
No, not necessarily! I have tested this recipe without sugar and it works, but does not stay as fluffy.
It begins to dissolve after 2-3 minutes and will turn back into a liquid. I also tested this recipe using collagen instead of sugar.
I tested using 1/2 tbsp of collagen with the instant coffee and water and again it wasn’t as fluffy, but it did the trick. Without the sugar it will yield a very strong bitter taste.
If you want stiff peaks in your fluffy whipped dalgona coffee like the photos, I would recommend using the sugar!
DO YOU NEED A HAND MIXER TO MAKE THIS?
No, you can simply use a whisk, a handheld milk frother, an immersion blender or a stand mixer if you have one! Using a hand mixer it takes approximately 5-6 minutes to get this fluffy.
If you are using a hand frother or a whisk it will take a bit longer and your arm may get tired!
CAN I USE DRIP HOT COFFEE INSTEAD OF INSTANT COFFEE?
No, this will not work with brewed coffee! I use the Tim Hortons instant coffee, but I’ve seen many people using the Nescafe Classic.
If you are sensitive to caffeine I would highly suggest getting decaf instant coffee, and this will definitely give you a good buzz after consuming your fluffy whipped dalgona coffee.
CAN I USE HOT MILK INSTEAD OF COLD MILK?
Yes, you can use hot milk instead of cold milk to make a warm version of Dalgona coffee. However, the whipped coffee foam might dissolve faster in hot milk, so you might not get the same layered effect as with cold milk.
