Air Fryer Grapefruit (Broiled with Cinnamon)

This Air Fryer Grapefruit is broiled with brown sugar and cinnamon until the top caramelizes, ready in about 6 minutes with 4 ingredients.

I started making this on the mornings I wanted something warm and a little sweet without reaching for a pastry, and now I make it more than I want to admit.

Air fryer grapefruit is a grapefruit half topped with brown sugar and cinnamon, then air fried at 400ยฐF for 5 to 6 minutes until the sugar caramelizes and the fruit turns warm and juicy. The bitter edge mellows, the top goes crackly and golden, and the whole thing tastes like way more effort than it takes.

The air fryer does this better than the oven broiler for one reason: no preheating a big oven for one piece of fruit. You get the same caramelized top in a fraction of the time.

If you like fruit in the air fryer, I make my Air Fryer Pineapple and Air Fryer Banana the same way.

Ingredients

Four things, plus whatever you want on top. Exact amounts are in the recipe card at the bottom.

  • Pink grapefruit โ€” ruby red or Texas red both work. Pink and red are sweeter than white, so they caramelize a little better.
  • Brown sugar โ€” this is what melts into that crackly top. Coconut sugar, maple syrup, or monk fruit sweetener all swap in if you want it less refined.
  • Cinnamon โ€” warms the whole thing up and cuts the tartness.
  • Coconut oil spray โ€” a light spray keeps the edges from drying out. Any neutral oil spray works.
  • Optional toppings โ€” a spoon of greek yogurt or coconut yogurt, or a scoop of ice cream with a cherry if you’re taking it dessert direction.

How To Make Air Fryer Grapefruit

  1. Prep the grapefruit. Cut the grapefruit in half with a sharp knife. If it wobbles, slice a thin piece off the bottom of each half so it sits flat. Loosen the segments with a paring knife so it’s easy to eat later.
  2. Top it. Spray the cut sides with a little coconut oil, then sprinkle on the brown sugar and cinnamon. Press the sugar in gently so it sticks.
  3. Air fry. Place the halves cut-side up in the air fryer basket and air fry at 400ยฐF for 5 to 6 minutes, until the sugar is bubbling and caramelized.
  4. Finish. Let it sit a minute so the top sets, then add greek yogurt and a little more cinnamon if you want.

Tips For The Best Broiled Grapefruit

Every air fryer runs a little different, so watch it the first time. You want the sugar bubbling and golden, not burnt, and that can happen anywhere from 5 to 7 minutes depending on your machine.

  • Loosen the segments before cooking. Running a knife around each section while it’s raw means you can scoop clean bites straight out of the warm fruit.
  • Don’t crowd the basket. Give the halves room so the hot air can hit the tops and caramelize the sugar.
  • Add a pinch of flaky salt at the end if you want to push the sweet-tart contrast even further.

What To Serve With It

On its own it’s a warm, fruit-forward breakfast or a light dessert. To make it more of a meal, I pair it with something savory on the side, scrambled eggs, or greek yogurt and granola for a little protein. Taken dessert direction, a small scoop of vanilla ice cream over the warm fruit is so good.

How To Store

Air fryer grapefruit is best fresh and warm, the second the caramelized top cools it loses the magic. If you only want one half now, wrap the uncut half tightly and keep it in the fridge for 1 to 3 days, then broil it fresh when you want it.

I don’t recommend freezing this. The fruit turns mushy once the water content thaws.

Air Fryer Grapefruit FAQ

What temperature and how long do you air fry grapefruit? Air fry grapefruit halves at 400ยฐF for 5 to 6 minutes, until the brown sugar caramelizes and bubbles. Air fryers vary, so start checking at 5 minutes.

Can I make it without sugar? Yes. Coconut sugar and pure maple syrup both caramelize well, and monk fruit sweetener works if you want it lower in sugar. The grapefruit is naturally sweet once it warms up, so you need less than you’d think.

Is warm grapefruit good for you? Grapefruit brings fiber, vitamin C, and vitamin A, and warming it doesn’t strip that away. This version keeps the added sugar to about a teaspoon per half, so it leans fruit-forward.

Does cooking grapefruit change the medication interaction? No. Heat does not remove grapefruit’s interaction with certain medications like some statins and blood pressure drugs. If you take a medication affected by grapefruit, check with your pharmacist or doctor before adding it in.
