COOKING EGGS IN AN AIR FRYER
Boiling eggs in an air fryer could not be easier. I start by preheating the air fryer to 250°F. You could skip this step and just add an extra couple of minutes to the cooking time but I like to start by preheating.
Now, just place the eggs in the air fryer basket in a single layer, set the timer anywhere between 13 and 16 minutes and wait until they’re cooked to your desired doneness.
Air fry hard boiled eggs will take about 16 minutes while air fry soft boiled eggs will already be done after 13 minutes.
At this point I always like to mention that different air fryers are like microwaves and all of them have different wattages. So every air fryer is basically a bit different and your eggs may have a different cook time.
Try it with one or two eggs first and don’t put a whole carton in there if this is your first time.
As soon as your eggs are cooked, place them in an ice cold water bath, made with cold water and ice cubes. This final step helps to immediately stop the cooking process and it also makes them so easy to peel. You can alternatively just run them under cold running water for a minute.
Your boiled eggs will come out perfectly cooked and here’s another perk: they are easy to peel!
WAYS TO USE AIR FRIED EGGS
Here are some creative ways to use air fryer hard boiled eggs in various dishes:
- Classic Deviled Eggs: Scoop out the yolks, mix them with mayonnaise, mustard, and seasonings, then spoon the mixture back into the egg whites for a timeless appetizer.
- Avocado Egg Salad: Mash the egg yolks with diced avocado, red onion, a squeeze of lemon juice, salt, and pepper for a creamy and nutritious egg salad. Could even add some bagel seasoning for extra flavor. Use this on egg salad sandwiches.
- Egg and Avocado Toast: Slice the soft-boiled eggs and arrange them on whole-grain toast spread with mashed avocado. Sprinkle with salt, pepper, and a drizzle of olive oil.
- Egg-Stuffed Breakfast Burrito: Slice the eggs and tuck them into a whole-wheat tortilla with cooked breakfast sausage, sautéed vegetables, and a sprinkle of cheese.
- Cobb Salad Upgrade: Add sliced air fryer hard boiled eggs to your Cobb salad along with bacon, avocado, tomatoes, blue cheese, and grilled chicken.
- Quick Pickled Eggs: Place peeled eggs in a jar with a mixture of vinegar, water, sugar, and spices. Let them sit for a day or two for a tangy and flavorful snack.
- Egg and Spinach Wrap: Wrap sliced jammy eggs, baby spinach, diced tomatoes, and a drizzle of ranch dressing in a whole-grain wrap for a nutritious on-the-go meal.
- Potato Salad Remix: Mix diced eggs with boiled potatoes, chopped celery, red onion, and a creamy mustard-based dressing for a delicious potato salad variation.
STORAGE
Let the eggs cool to room temperature after using the ice water bath. Unpeeled hard boiled eggs, can be stored in any airtight container in the fridge.
For peeled eggs, you can store them in a bowl of cold water to cover. You want to make sure to change the water daily.
Alternatively, you can store them in a sealed container without adding the water. Instead, you will want to cover the eggs with damp paper towels to keep them from drying out.
CAN YOU FREEZE HARD BOILED EGGS?
As for the egg yolk, yes. However, I have heard that the eggs become a bit tough and rubbery after thawing, or can even leak and change color.
Cooked yolks, when placed in a freezer-safe container or freezer bag, will stay good for up to 3 months.
