Nashville Hot Mozzarella Sticks

Regular mozzarella sticks are great and all, but these? Theyโ€™re on a whole other level.

I took the classic cheesy appetizer we all love and gave it a spicy Nashville hot twist. You still get that epic cheese pull, but wrapped in a crispy, fiery coating that has just the right amount of heat.

Basically, once you make these, plain old mozzarella sticks are going to feel kinda boring.

Simple Ingredients You Need For The Nashville Hot Mozzarella Sticks

You will need the following handful of ingredients listed below to make this perfect appetizer (the exact measurements, nutritional information and full recipe are in the printable recipe card at the bottom of the post):

  • Mozzarella cheese โ€“ cut in slices.

  • All-purpose flour โ€“ or gluten-free flour if needed.

  • Eggs โ€“ whisked for dredging.

  • Panko breadcrumbs โ€“ for maximum crunch.

  • Hot sauce โ€“ mixed into the egg wash for heat.

  • Brown sugar sweetener – I used brown sugar monkfruit sweetener
  • Butter or margarine
  • Cayenne pepper โ€“ key for that Nashville kick.

  • Smoked paprika โ€“ adds depth and color.

  • Garlic powder + onion powder โ€“ flavor boosters.

  • Salt + black pepper

  • Oil spray โ€“ to crisp them up in the air fryer.

  • Optional for dipping: ranch, blue cheese, or extra hot sauce.

How To Make The Easy Nashville Hot Mozzarella Sticks

  1. Set up a dredging station with three bowls: flour in the first, whisked eggs in the second, and panko mixed with cayenne, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper in the third.

  2. Dip each mozzarella stick in flour, then egg wash, then flour again, then egg wash again, then breadcrumbs.

  3. Place coated sticks on a baking sheet and put them in the freezer for at least 1 hour (this keeps the cheese from oozing out too quickly).

  4. Spray mozzarella sticks with cooking oil and air fry at 375ยฐF for 8-12 minutes, flipping halfway, until golden and crispy. Keep a close eye near the end so the cheese doesnโ€™t escape.

  5. While the mozzarella sticks are cooking, make the nashville hot sauce by combining your hot sauce, brown sugar substitute, butter, paprika, and cayenne pepper.
  6. Once the mozza sticks are golden brown and crunchy, coat them in the nashville sauce and serve hot with ranch, blue cheese, or more hot sauce for dipping.

Tips And Tricks For Best Results

  • Double coat: The second layer of breadcrumbs makes them extra crispy.

  • Freeze first: Donโ€™t skip this step or the cheese will melt out too fast.

  • Adjust the spice: Add more or less cayenne depending on your heat tolerance.

  • Use block mozzarella: Slice into sticks if you canโ€™t find pre-cut cheese sticks.

  • Batch cook: These freeze great โ€” just reheat in the air fryer when the craving hits.

Storing Leftovers

Store cooked mozzarella sticks in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 days. Reheat in the air fryer until hot and crispy again. You can also freeze uncooked breaded sticks and cook them straight from frozen.

Faqs

Can I bake the nashville hot mozzarella sticks instead of air frying?

Yes! Bake at 425ยฐF for 10โ€“12 minutes, flipping halfway, until crispy.

Are these really spicy?

Theyโ€™ve got a good kick from cayenne and hot sauce, but you can tone it down by using less spice or dipping in ranch.

Can I make these gluten-free?

Absolutely โ€” just use gluten-free flour and gluten-free breadcrumbs.
