Air Fryer Popcorn (No Oil Needed, Fluffy Every Time)

Air fryer popcorn is made with just popcorn kernels and a sheet of aluminum foil โ€” no microwave bag, no stovetop pot, no oil required. Ready in 8 minutes and fluffier than anything that ever came out of a bag.

Microwave popcorn bags have no business existing when this method takes the same amount of time and tastes significantly better. The air fryer pops kernels using circulating hot air โ€” no oil bath, no chemical bag lining, no sad half-popped kernels sitting at the bottom. Just popcorn.

I’ve made this enough times to know exactly what makes it work and what makes it a smoky disaster. Spoiler: the foil situation matters a lot. Keep reading.

Ingredients You’ll Need

(Full measurements are in the recipe card below.)

  • Popcorn kernels โ€” plain, unpopped kernels from any brand. Orville Redenbacher and Bob’s Red Mill are both great. Find them near the microwave popcorn bags at the grocery store. Do not use microwave popcorn bags in the air fryer โ€” the oil and packaging will burn.
  • Oil (optional) โ€” a light drizzle of avocado oil, olive oil, or coconut oil helps seasonings stick and gives a buttery base flavor. Completely optional โ€” the kernels will pop fine without any oil at all.
  • Salt and seasonings โ€” added AFTER cooking only. See the flavor ideas section below.

How to Make Air Fryer Popcorn

  1. Prep the foil. Cut a piece of aluminum foil to fit the base of your air fryer basket. Press it in snugly โ€” critical: only cover the base, not the sides and not the holes. The air holes need to stay open so hot air can circulate and pop the kernels. If the foil blocks the vents or blows upward it can cause smoking and burning.
  2. Add kernels in a single layer. Place ยผ cup of kernels directly on the foil in a single layer. Don’t stack them โ€” kernels need space to expand and pop. If making a bigger batch, cook in two separate rounds.
  3. Air fry at 400ยฐF for 7โ€“8 minutes. No preheating needed. After about 3 minutes you’ll start hearing pops. Cook until the popping slows to one pop every few seconds โ€” just like stovetop popcorn.
  4. Wait 30 seconds before opening. Let the last few kernels pop inside the closed basket before you open it.
  5. Remove popped popcorn first. Transfer all the popped popcorn to a bowl. Check for any unpopped kernels left on the foil โ€” put them back in the air fryer for 2โ€“3 more minutes to pop. This gets you close to zero wasted kernels.
  6. Season immediately. Drizzle with melted butter or oil and toss with salt and any seasonings while the popcorn is still warm โ€” seasonings stick much better to warm popcorn.

Do NOT add salt or seasonings to unpopped kernels. Season AFTER cooking only โ€” salt on raw kernels draws out moisture which interferes with popping and leads to more duds.

Only cover the base with foil. The air holes in the sides of the basket need to stay clear. Foil blocking the vents is the most common reason air fryer popcorn produces smoke or burns.

Use less than you think. ยผ cup of kernels makes about 7 cups of popped popcorn โ€” that’s a full bowl. Overfilling leads to uneven popping and more duds because the kernels can’t move freely.

Listen for the slowdown. Stop when the popping slows to one pop every few seconds. Waiting for every last kernel to pop will burn the ones that already popped.

Seasoning Ideas

Plain with salt and butter is a classic. Here’s what else works brilliantly:

  1. Classic movie theater โ€” melted butter + fine sea salt. Toss immediately while popcorn is warm.
  2. Cinnamon sugar โ€” 2 tbsp powdered sugar + 1 tsp cinnamon + a pinch of salt. Sweet and nostalgic.
  3. Garlic parmesan โ€” melted butter + garlic powder + finely grated parmesan + Italian seasoning.
  4. Spicy buffalo โ€” drizzle with Frank’s RedHot + melted butter. Add a pinch of garlic powder.
  5. Everything bagel โ€” drizzle with olive oil then toss with Everything But the Bagel seasoning. Addictive.
  6. Truffle โ€” drizzle with truffle oil + flaky sea salt + finely grated parmesan. Fancy movie night energy.
  7. Chocolate โ€” drizzle with melted dark chocolate while popcorn is warm, let set on parchment for 5 minutes.
  8. Ranch โ€” toss with dry ranch seasoning packet immediately after cooking. Game day crowd-pleaser.

Store leftover popcorn in an airtight container or zip-lock bag at room temperature for up to 1 week. Do not refrigerate or freeze โ€” moisture ruins the texture. If it goes a bit stale, pop it back in the air fryer at 300ยฐF for 2 minutes to re-crisp.

Ingredients

  • ยผ cup plain popcorn kernels
  • Sea salt
  • ยผ cup melted butter

Instructions

  • To make air fryer popcorn, simply add 1/4 cup of popcorn kernels to the air fryer basket with aluminum foil (make sure the aluminum foil isn't covering the entire basket – see photo in directions for reference). Make sure that the kernels are spread out in a single layer to ensure even popping.
  • Close the air fryer basket and set the temperature to 400ยฐF. After about 3 minutes, you'll start to hear the kernels pop.
  • Let cook for 7-8 minutes.
  • Once the popping slows down, turn off the air fryer and let it sit for a minute to allow any remaining kernels to pop.
  • Once your air fryer popcorn is ready, you can add your favorite seasonings and toppings, such as salt, butter, nutritional yeast, or even cinnamon sugar. You can also get creative with different flavor combinations, such as garlic and parmesan, ranch seasoning, or spicy chili powder.
