WHAT IS MATCHA?

Matcha is a high-grade powdered green tea ground into powdered form. The green tea powder is whisked into hot water, instead of steeped, to form a frothy drink.

The meditative act of preparing, presenting, and sipping matcha is the backbone of the Japanese tea ceremony. While matcha’s origins are ceremonial, the green tea powder is widely popular around the world in beverages like tea lattes or boba tea, and as a cooking ingredient in everything from ice cream to salad dressing.

There are different grades of matcha, one being ceremonial and one being culinary. Ceremonial is classified as a higher grade and has a more vibrant green color.

WHAT IS A LAYERED STRAWBERRY MATCHA LATTE?

It’s a refreshing drink with blended fresh or frozen strawberries, milk, and matcha green tea. This Strawberry Matcha Latte is fruity, refreshing, and really simple to make.

Since matcha recipes typically have some bitterness to them, this matcha strawberry latte is the perfect drink to cut down on the bitter taste. The strawberry layer is made with real strawberries and a little sugar to add some sweetness.

KEY INGREDIENTS FOR THE STRAWBERRY MATCHA LATTE RECIPE

You will need the following ingredients listed below to make this famous strawberry matcha latte (the exact measurements and full recipe are in the recipe card at the bottom of this post):

  • Frozen strawberries – or fresh strawberries for the fresh strawberry puree.
  • Granulated white sugar – you can also use honey, maple syrup, agave or any type of liquid sweetener if you prefer.
  • Cold water and hot water
  • Ceremonial Matcha powder – ceremonial grade matcha is best but you can also use culinary grade matcha or any type of green tea powder. A good quality matcha will taste better and have more benefits.
  • Almond milk – or your favorite milk of choice such as coconut milk, oat milk, whole milk, soy milk, cow’s milk, etc.

HOW TO MAKE THE ICED STRAWBERRY MATCHA LATTE RECIPE

  1. Add frozen strawberries to a high powdered blender with white sugar and blend until puree forms. Alternatively if using fresh strawberries you can use a small bowl and puree using the back of a fork.
  2. Using a matcha whisk, whisk matcha in hot water until frothy. You can also use an electric frother if you have one.
  3. Add the strawberry puree to the bottom of the glass, followed by the ice cubes. Then slowly add in your milk and top with matcha layer.
  4. Serve and enjoy!

TIPS AND TRICKS FOR BEST RESULTS

  • Use Ceremonial Grade Matcha – For the smoothest, least bitter taste, go for ceremonial-grade matcha. It blends better and won’t leave you with a grassy aftertaste.
  • Don’t Use Boiling Water for Matcha – Matcha gets bitter if the water is too hot. Keep it around 175°F (80°C) for a smooth, vibrant flavor.
  • Whisk It Right – Use a bamboo matcha whisk (chasen) and whisk in a W or M motion until frothy. No whisk? A handheld frother works too!
  • Blend the Strawberry Puree Well – For the best texture, use a high-powered blender to make the strawberry puree silky smooth. If using fresh strawberries, mash them thoroughly to avoid chunks.
  • Layer Like a Pro – To get those Insta-worthy layers, pour the milk slowly over the strawberry puree, then gently add the matcha last. Using the back of a spoon while pouring can help with layering.
  • Customize the Sweetness – Adjust the sugar in the strawberry puree to your taste. You can also swap for honey, maple syrup, or coconut sugar for a refined sugar-free option.
  • Use Ice for the Best Effect – Ice helps keep the layers separate. No ice? The matcha and milk will mix instantly, which is still delicious but less aesthetic.
  • Try Different Milks – Almond milk gives a light, nutty flavor, but you can swap it for oat milk (extra creamy!), coconut milk (for a tropical twist), or dairy milk for a richer taste.
  • Double the Strawberry Puree – Make extra and store it in the fridge for 3 days—perfect for quick lattes later or drizzling over yogurt!
  • Shake It Up – If you’re feeling lazy (or just want a different texture), mix everything in a shaker bottle with ice for a quick, foamy blended drink.
  • Stir Before Sipping – Those layers are pretty, but mixing it up before drinking gives you the perfect balance of flavors in every sip.

STORING LEFTOVER STRAWBERRY FLUFFY MATCHA

  • Best Served Fresh – This drink is at its peak flavor and texture when enjoyed immediately. The layers will start to mix over time, and the matcha may settle at the bottom.
  • Refrigerate for Later – If you need to store it, cover the glass with a lid or plastic wrap and place it in the fridge for up to 24 hours. Give it a good stir before drinking.
  • Ice Melts = Dilution – If you plan to store it, remove the ice cubes before refrigerating to prevent the drink from becoming watered down. You can always add fresh ice when you’re ready to serve.
  • Re-Froth the Matcha – If the matcha has settled, whisk it again with a milk frother or spoon before drinking.
  • Strawberry Puree Storage – If you have leftover strawberry puree, store it separately in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. Use it for another latte, drizzle it over oatmeal, or add it to yogurt!
