Big Mac casserole topped with burger sauce, lettuce, and pickles

I wanted a Big Mac and a casserole at the same time one Sunday, so I made both happen in one dish, and now it’s the thing my everyone asks for on repeat.

A Big Mac casserole is a baked, bun-free version of the McDonald’s burger, made with seasoned ground beef, cheddar cheese, crispy tater tots, and homemade Big Mac sauce, then finished with shredded lettuce, diced pickles, and tomato. This version lands at 44g of protein per serving, so it tastes like fast food and keeps you full like a real meal.

I’ve made this more times than I can count, and the tater tot version wins every time over the bunless salad ones. The tots go golden and crispy on top, the cheddar melts into the beef underneath, and that cold crunch of lettuce and pickle on top is the part that makes it taste like the burger and not just a meat bake.

Why You’ll Love This Big Mac Casserole

  • 44g of protein per serving. Most Big Mac casseroles online land around 23 to 29g. This one nearly doubles that, so one square is a full dinner, not a side.
  • All the Big Mac flavor, none of the bun. Seasoned beef, that tangy special sauce, melty cheddar, and the fresh pickle and lettuce crunch on top. Gluten free when you grab gluten free tots.
  • One pan, feeds six. Brown the beef, layer, bake, top. It reheats great for lunches all week.

Ingredients You Need

Here’s what goes in and why. Exact amounts, nutrition, and the full printable recipe are in the recipe card at the bottom of this post.

  • Lean ground beef โ€” the protein base and the reason it tastes like a real Big Mac. Leaner beef means less grease to drain and a cleaner macro split.
  • White onion โ€” cooks down with the beef for that classic burger backbone.
  • Garlic powder and onion powder โ€” they layer in the savory burger flavor that fresh onion alone doesn’t quite hit.
  • Salt and black pepper โ€” season the beef as it browns so the flavor goes all the way through.
  • Homemade Big Mac sauce โ€” the thing that makes it a Big Mac and not just a beef casserole. My Big Mac sauce is mayo, sweet pickle relish, mustard, ketchup, minced onion, white vinegar, sugar, and a dash of paprika. Two thirds goes into the beef, the rest gets drizzled on top.
  • Shredded cheddar cheese โ€” melts into the beef layer and binds everything together. Grate it off a block for the best melt.
  • Tater tots โ€” the crispy golden top and the carb that makes it feel like a real meal with fries built in.
  • Iceberg lettuce, dill pickles, and tomato โ€” the cold, fresh toppings that go on after baking for that real-burger crunch.
  • Sesame seeds โ€” a small sprinkle on top to mimic the sesame bun. Skip them and it still tastes great, but they sell the Big Mac look.

How to Make This Big Mac Casserole

  1. Preheat and brown. Heat your oven to 400ยฐF. Cook the ground beef and diced onion in a large skillet over medium heat, seasoning with salt, pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder. Cook until the beef is browned and the onion is soft, then drain the grease.
  2. Sauce the beef. Stir two thirds of the Big Mac sauce into the beef. This is where it picks up that creamy, tangy burger flavor.
  3. Build the base. Spread the beef mixture across the bottom of your baking dish in an even layer.
  4. Add cheese. Sprinkle the shredded cheddar over the beef so it covers the whole surface.
  5. Top with tots. Arrange the tater tots in a single layer over the cheese, covering it completely.
  6. Bake. Slide it into the oven for 40 to 45 minutes, until the tots are golden and crispy.
  7. Finish fresh. Let it cool a few minutes, then top with shredded lettuce, diced pickles, and tomato. Drizzle with the rest of the Big Mac sauce and finish with a sprinkle of sesame seeds right before serving.

Tips for the Best Big Mac Casserole

  • Drain the beef well. Excess grease makes the layers soggy and the tots soft. Get it dry and the textures stay distinct.
  • Grate your own cheddar. Pre-shredded cheese is coated to stop clumping, which holds it back from a smooth melt. A block you shred yourself melts creamier.
  • Keep the tots in one even layer. Crowd them and the middle steams instead of crisps. One layer, edge to edge, gets every tot golden.
  • Top with the fresh stuff after baking, not before. Lettuce, pickle, and tomato go on once it’s out of the oven so they stay cold and crunchy against the warm beef.
  • Let it rest a few minutes before cutting. It sets up so your squares hold together instead of sliding apart.

Substitutions

  • Ground turkey or chicken swaps in for a leaner version. You lose a little of that beefy burger taste, so season a touch heavier.
  • American or Monterey Jack work in place of cheddar if that’s what you have. Anything that melts well is fine.
  • Thousand Island dressing stands in for the homemade Big Mac sauce when you’re short on time. It’s not identical, but it’s close.
  • Roasted diced potatoes or frozen fries work if you’re out of tater tots and still want that crispy potato top.

Storing Leftovers

Let the casserole cool to room temperature, then store it in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 to 4 days. To freeze, wrap individual portions or the whole dish and freeze for up to 3 months, then thaw overnight in the fridge before reheating.

Reheat individual portions in the microwave, or warm the whole dish in a 350ยฐF oven for 15 to 20 minutes. Add the fresh lettuce, pickle, and tomato after reheating so they stay crisp.

FAQs

Is Big Mac casserole gluten free? It can be. The beef, cheese, and sauce are naturally gluten free, so the only thing to check is your tater tots. Grab a brand marked gluten free (most plain frozen tots are) and you’re good.

Can I make Big Mac casserole ahead of time? Yes. Assemble the beef, cheese, and tot layers, cover, and keep it in the fridge for up to a day. Hold off on baking and on the fresh toppings until you’re ready. Bake straight from cold, adding a few extra minutes.

Is Thousand Island the same as Big Mac sauce? Not exactly, but it’s close enough to work in a pinch. Big Mac sauce has more of that tangy, pickle-forward bite, which is why I make my homemade version when I have the few extra minutes.

What do you serve with Big Mac casserole? It’s hearty enough to stand on its own, but a crisp green salad or a wedge salad balances the richness. If you want more on the table, roasted veggies or extra pickles on the side round it out.
