Kirkland Panko Shrimp Air Fryer (Costco Recipe)
How to cook Kirkland Panko Shrimp from Costco in the air fryer โ crispy panko coating, juicy shrimp inside, done in about 10 minutes, and so much better than the oven.

The Kirkland Panko Shrimp from Costco are one of those freezer staples I keep on hand constantly because they go from frozen to crispy and on the table in about 15 minutes in the air fryer โ no preheating a big oven, no thawing, no oil bath.
The air fryer gets the panko coating genuinely crunchy in a way the oven never quite manages, and the shrimp inside stays juicy instead of drying out.
I make these as a quick dinner with rice and sweet Thai chili sauce, as a party appetizer, or honestly just as a snack when I want something hot and crispy fast. Here’s exactly how to do it.

What Are Kirkland Panko Shrimp?
Kirkland Signature Breaded Panko Shrimp is a Costco product โ jumbo butterfly shrimp coated in a thick panko breadcrumb coating, sold frozen in a 2.5 lb box (roughly 40โ50 shrimp depending on size) for around $19.99.
The panko coating is heavier than regular breadcrumbs which is what gives them that satisfying crunch, and the butterfly cut means you get more surface area for the breading to crisp up on.
They’re not the same as the Kirkland Tempura Shrimp โ tempura batter is lighter and the shrimp are straight, while the panko shrimp are butterflied and have a thicker, crunchier coating. If your box says “Tempura” the cook time is slightly different (see FAQ below).

How to Cook Kirkland Panko Shrimp in the Air Fryer
This is the whole method โ straight from frozen, no thawing needed.
Step 1. Preheat your air fryer to 400ยฐF for 3โ5 minutes. Preheating matters here โ starting with a hot air fryer is what gets the panko coating crunchy fast instead of just warming through.
Step 2. Arrange in a single layer. Place the frozen shrimp in one layer in the basket with a little space between each. Don’t stack or overlap โ the hot air needs to circulate around every shrimp to get the coating crispy. Cook in batches if you need to.
Step 3. Optional oil spray. A light spray of avocado oil or olive oil spray over the shrimp before cooking helps the panko brown faster and get crispier. Technically optional, but genuinely worth it.
Step 4. Air fry at 400ยฐF for 8-10 minutes, flipping halfway through at the 4-5 minute mark. Check at 8 minutes โ if the panko is golden brown and the shrimp feel firm, they’re done. If you want them darker and crunchier, give them another 2โ3 minutes.
Step 5. Rest for 2 minutes on a plate before serving. The coating crisps up a little more as it rests and the shrimp inside finishes cooking through.
Note on timing: Air fryer models vary a lot in power. 8-10 minutes works in most standard basket air fryers. If you have a smaller or weaker model, you may need to cook for longer. Start checking at 8 minutes and go from there. The shrimp are done when the panko is deep golden and the coating feels firm when you tap it with tongs.

Kirkland Panko Shrimp Cooking Times (All Methods)
Air fryer (best method): 400ยฐF for 8-10 minutes, flip halfway. No preheating the oven, crispiest result, done fastest.
Conventional oven: 400ยฐF for 16โ18 minutes on a middle rack, flip after 10 minutes. Works well but takes longer with preheat time factored in.
Convection oven: 375ยฐF for 12โ15 minutes, flip halfway. Faster than conventional because of the fan circulation.
Microwave: not recommended. The panko goes soggy and the texture is completely different. Don’t do it.
The air fryer wins every time on crispiness and speed. The only reason to use the oven is if you’re cooking a very large batch (more than one basket’s worth) and it’s faster to do it all at once.

Best Dipping Sauces for Kirkland Panko Shrimp
This is where you can take these from a quick snack to an actual meal situation. My favorites:
- Sweet Thai chili sauce โ the classic. The sweetness and mild heat complement the panko coating perfectly and it’s what Costco basically designed these for. Buy a bottle of Mae Ploy or Trader Joe’s version and keep it in the fridge permanently.
- Homemade chipotle mayo โ mix 3 tablespoons of mayo with 1 teaspoon chipotle in adobo (or chipotle powder), a squeeze of lime, and a pinch of salt. Smoky, creamy, and takes about 2 minutes to make. This is my personal favorite with these shrimp.
- Garlic butter โ melt 2 tablespoons of butter with 2 minced garlic cloves and a squeeze of lemon juice. Dip the shrimp straight in the warm butter. This is the version I make when I want these to feel like a restaurant appetizer.
- Cocktail sauce โ if you’re serving these as a party appetizer, cocktail sauce is the crowd-pleaser move. Horseradish level to taste.
- Bang bang sauce โ mix mayo, sweet chili sauce, and a dash of sriracha. The TikTok sauce that goes with everything. It genuinely slaps on panko shrimp.
- Soy ginger dipping sauce โ soy sauce, rice vinegar, a little sesame oil, grated fresh ginger, and sliced green onions. This is the sauce I make when I’m serving these over rice as a full dinner.
How to Serve Kirkland Panko Shrimp
- Quick dinner: Serve over white rice or fried rice with sweet Thai chili sauce and steamed broccoli or edamame. Dinner in under 20 minutes total.
- Party appetizer: Arrange on a platter with two or three dipping sauces. These disappear faster than anything else at a party and they look impressive for something that took zero effort.
- Shrimp tacos: Cut the tails off and tuck them into small corn tortillas with shredded cabbage, avocado, and a drizzle of chipotle mayo. Fast, fun, and genuinely great.
- Shrimp rice bowls: Over rice with sliced avocado, cucumber, shredded carrots, and a soy ginger sauce on top. The rice bowl version is the one I make when I want these to feel like a proper meal.
- Straight from the air fryer with dipping sauce โ sometimes there’s no occasion, you just want crispy shrimp and a sauce. Completely valid.

Tips for the Best Results
- Don’t overcrowd. The single biggest mistake. If the shrimp are touching or overlapping, they steam instead of crisping and the panko goes soft. Single layer, always. Cook in two batches if you need to โ the second batch is worth the extra 15 minutes.
- Spray them. The optional oil spray is not really optional if you want maximum crunch. A 2-second spray of avocado oil before they go in makes the panko go noticeably darker and crispier.
- Flip at the halfway mark. Don’t skip this โ the bottom side gets more direct heat from the basket and will overcook while the top stays pale if you don’t flip.
- Check your specific air fryer. Times vary by model. A Ninja Foodi runs slightly different from a Cosori or a Philips. The first time you make these, check at 12 minutes and go from there. Once you know your air fryer’s timing, it’s the same every time.
- Serve immediately. Panko shrimp are best the moment they come out of the air fryer. They soften a little as they sit โ still good, but the crunch is at its peak fresh out of the basket.
Storing and Reheating Leftovers
Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2โ3 days. To reheat and get the crunch back: air fryer at 375ยฐF for 3โ4 minutes โ don’t microwave, the coating goes completely soggy.
The reheated shrimp won’t be quite as crispy as fresh out of the fryer but they’re still really good, which is more than you can say for most things you reheat.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long do you cook Kirkland Panko Shrimp in the air fryer? Cook Kirkland Panko Shrimp at 400ยฐF for 8-10 minutes from frozen, flipping halfway through at the 4-5 minute mark. Check at 8 minutes โ the panko should be deep golden brown and the coating should feel firm. Air fryer models vary, so check a minute or two early the first time you make them.
What is the difference between Kirkland Panko Shrimp and Kirkland Tempura Shrimp? The panko shrimp are jumbo butterfly shrimp in a thick, crunchy panko breadcrumb coating โ the coating is heavier and crispier. The tempura shrimp are straight-cut shrimp in a lighter tempura batter, similar to what you’d get at a Japanese restaurant. Both are good and both cook similarly in the air fryer, but the texture is different โ panko is crunchier and more substantial, tempura is lighter and crispier in a more delicate way.
Can you cook Kirkland Panko Shrimp from frozen? Yes โ go straight from the freezer, no thawing needed. Thawing before air frying actually makes the coating wetter and less crispy. Frozen straight into the basket is the correct move.
Are Kirkland Panko Shrimp good if you don’t usually like shrimp? The thick panko coating means these have a much milder, less “fishy” flavor than fresh or plain frozen shrimp. The shrimp flavor is there but it’s subtle โ what you mostly taste is the crispy, savory panko coating. A lot of people who are hesitant about shrimp end up liking these specifically because the coating does most of the flavor work.

I โค๏ธโค๏ธโค๏ธCostco Panko Shrimps. I go through a box in less than 3 months (just me) . I did come here looking for ways to change them up I bit. They are a nice size and tasty.
Same, they’re such a staple in my freezer too! So glad you came here looking for new ways to use them โ that’s exactly why I made this post. Let me know which variation you try first! ๐
The recipe called for 14-17mins cook time in the air fryer at 400 degrees, but when I went to turn it half way through (at 8 mins.), it was already done. (checked with thermometer).
Thanks so much for flagging this! Air fryers really do vary a ton between brands and models โ sounds like yours runs hot (which is actually great, faster dinner!). Always smart to check at the halfway mark like you did. I’ll add a note to the post about checking earlier for anyone with a more powerful air fryer ๐
