Frozen Cauliflower Wings in the Air Fryer (Crispy + Easy)

How to cook frozen cauliflower wings straight from the bag in the air fryer โ€” 400ยฐF for 12โ€“15 minutes, single layer, flip halfway, and they come out genuinely crispy in a way the oven can’t match. Vegan, gluten-free, and the game day snack I make constantly.

Frozen cauliflower wings are one of those things I always have in the freezer for when I want something crispy and snacky without any real effort. The air fryer gets them significantly crispier than the oven โ€” the circulating hot air crisps the coating all the way around in 12โ€“15 minutes without any flipping drama โ€” and they’re done before you’ve finished prepping the dipping sauce.

Birds Eye and Trader Joe’s are the two brands I reach for most, both buffalo-flavored, both excellent in the air fryer. If you want to make them from scratch instead, I have a full Homemade Vegan Buffalo Cauliflower Wings recipe that’s also incredible. But for a Tuesday night or a game day spread where you want something good fast, frozen is the move.

Ingredients

  • 1 bag frozen cauliflower wings โ€” any brand works with this method. Birds Eye Buffalo Style Cauliflower Wings and Trader Joe’s Cauliflower Buffalo Wings are the two I make most often. Both are already sauced and coated โ€” you don’t need to add anything. Look for: buffalo, BBQ, or plain breaded versions depending on what you’re in the mood for.
  • Cooking spray (optional) โ€” a light spray of avocado oil or olive oil over the frozen wings before cooking helps the coating get crispier and more golden. The wings already have some fat in the coating so this is optional, but worth doing.
  • Dipping sauce for serving โ€” buffalo sauce, ranch, blue cheese, vegan ranch, or honey mustard. The sauced frozen versions don’t need additional sauce, but having something cold and creamy on the side for dipping makes the whole thing better.

How to Cook Frozen Cauliflower Wings in the Air Fryer

Step 1. Preheat to 400ยฐF for 3โ€“5 minutes. A properly preheated air fryer starts crisping the coating immediately rather than letting the wings slowly come up to temperature and steam.

Step 2. Single layer in the basket. Place the frozen wings in a single layer โ€” don’t overlap or stack. The coating crisps because hot air circulates around every piece. Overlapping means the touching sides stay soft. Cook in batches if you have a full bag.

Step 3. Light oil spray (optional). A 2-second spray of avocado oil over the tops gives the coating a noticeably better golden color and crunch. Skip it if you prefer to go as-is โ€” they’ll still be good.

Step 4. Air fry at 400ยฐF for 12โ€“15 minutes, flipping at the halfway mark (6โ€“7 minutes). After the flip, the bottom side should be golden and slightly firm. The wings are done when the coating is crispy and golden on both sides โ€” check at 12 minutes and add time if needed.

Step 5. Serve immediately. Frozen cauliflower wings lose their crunch faster than chicken wings as they cool. Eat them straight out of the air fryer with your dipping sauce. If you’re cooking batches for a party, stagger them so each batch comes out right when people are ready to eat.

Brands โ€” What I’ve Actually Used

  • Birds Eye Buffalo Style Cauliflower Wings โ€” the most widely available option. Pre-sauced in a buffalo coating that gets sticky and slightly caramelized in the air fryer. These are the ones I make most often โ€” 14 minutes at 400ยฐF in my air fryer, flip at 7.
  • Trader Joe’s Cauliflower Buffalo Wings โ€” similar to Birds Eye but slightly crispier coating and a bit more heat in the buffalo sauce. Same cook time. Highly recommend if you have a Trader Joe’s nearby.
  • Sol Cuisine – brand pictured here. Other two brands above are preferred.
  • Plain breaded (no sauce) โ€” some brands sell plain panko-breaded cauliflower without sauce. These need a dipping sauce since there’s no flavoring on them, but they’re the most versatile โ€” you can toss them in any sauce you want after cooking. Cook time is the same.
  • Not all brands are vegan or gluten-free โ€” check the label. Most buffalo-style frozen cauliflower wings contain egg in the coating, making them not vegan despite being plant-based. Truly vegan versions exist but you need to read the ingredients list. Same with gluten-free โ€” the coating on most brands contains wheat flour.

Dipping Sauces

The pre-sauced frozen versions taste great on their own, but a cold creamy dipping sauce alongside is the combination.

  • Ranch or vegan ranch โ€” the classic pairing with buffalo cauliflower. Hidden Valley or any vegan ranch from the store works.
  • Blue cheese dressing โ€” if you’re not vegan, this is the traditional buffalo wing pairing and it’s excellent here too.
  • Extra buffalo sauce โ€” if you want more heat than what came on the wings, a little extra Frank’s RedHot on the side or tossed over the cooked wings.
  • Honey mustard โ€” works especially well with the BBQ-flavored variety for a sweet-tangy combination.
  • Sriracha mayo โ€” mix equal parts mayo and sriracha. Works with any flavor of frozen cauliflower wing.

Oven Method

Don’t have an air fryer or cooking a large batch? The oven works โ€” the wings just won’t be quite as crispy.

Preheat oven to 400ยฐF. Place frozen wings on a parchment-lined baking sheet in a single layer. Bake for 20โ€“25 minutes, flipping halfway through at the 12-minute mark. The coating will be golden and set but slightly less crunchy than the air fryer version. Spray with oil before baking for better browning.

Tips

Single layer is non-negotiable. More than any other tip on this post โ€” frozen cauliflower wings steam each other if they’re overlapping and the coating goes soft instead of crispy. Two batches is worth it over one crowded batch.

400ยฐF over 375ยฐF. The higher temperature is what gets the coating genuinely crispy rather than just cooked. Most package instructions say 400ยฐF for the air fryer โ€” go with the higher temp.

Serve immediately. The cauliflower inside releases some moisture as it cools, which softens the coating faster than it would for chicken wings. These are best the moment they come out.

Add extra sauce after, not during. If you want more sauce on them, toss in a bowl with extra buffalo sauce right after they come out while they’re still hot. Adding sauce mid-cook will make the coating soggy before it’s crisped.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long do you cook frozen cauliflower wings in the air fryer? Cook at 400ยฐF for 12โ€“15 minutes, flipping halfway through at the 6โ€“7 minute mark. Check at 12 minutes โ€” the coating should be golden and slightly firm on both sides. Add 1โ€“2 minutes if they need more color. All air fryer models vary slightly so check your specific brand’s package instructions as a starting point and adjust from there.

Can you make homemade cauliflower wings instead of frozen? Yes โ€” and they’re incredible. My Homemade Vegan Buffalo Cauliflower Wings recipe makes them from scratch with a crispy battered coating and homemade buffalo sauce. Takes about 30 minutes but the result is better than any frozen version. The frozen option is for when you want something good fast โ€” the homemade version is for when you want the best version.

Are frozen cauliflower wings vegan and gluten-free? Not always โ€” check the label. Many brands use egg in the coating (not vegan) and wheat flour (not gluten-free) even though cauliflower itself is both. Look specifically for brands that say “vegan” or “plant-based” on the packaging, and check the ingredients for wheat or egg if you have dietary restrictions.

How do you cook frozen cauliflower wings in the oven? Preheat oven to 400ยฐF. Place in a single layer on a parchment-lined baking sheet and bake for 20โ€“25 minutes, flipping halfway through. The oven works but the coating won’t be quite as crispy as the air fryer version. Spray with oil before baking for better browning.
