WHY YOU’LL LOVE THIS AIR FRYER APPLE CRISP RECIPE
What I love about air fryer cinnamon baked apples is that you get your sweet cravings satisfied, without all of the extra calories and added sugars of say, a slice of apple pie.
Baked fruits like pears, plums and apples are a great way to serve desserts that are light yet cozy and comforting. The fruit tends to get sweeter and softer, making it even more delicious when paired with a crispy oat topping and some melty ice cream or whipped cream.
I love using my air fryer for making desserts! Have you tried my Air Fryer Pineapple and my Air Fried Banana?
I have also made Air Fryer Apple Chips from fresh apple slices. Air fryer recipes have got to be my favorite type of recipes as they’re so easy and take no cooking time.
SIMPLE INGREDIENTS FOR THE INDIVIDUAL APPLE CRISPS
You will need the following ingredients listed below to make this apple filling (the exact measurements, nutritional information, and full recipe are in the printable recipe card below):
- Fresh apples – the kind of apples you choose does matter. Choose the type of apples that hold their shape like Gala, Granny Smith, Fuji apples, Golden Delicious, Braeburn, Pink Lady, or Honeycrisp apples.
- spices – just ground cinnamon is great but if you want, add in a pinch of nutmeg or cloves as well
- gluten-free quick oats
- maple syrup lends sweetness to our oatmeal crisp topping
- coconut oil spray – helps get the oatmeal crisp to stick together. Melted coconut oil or melted butter also work.
- optional – white sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon sugar, all purpose flour and cold butter for an easy streusel topping.
HOW TO MAKE THE AIR FRYER APPLE CRUMBLE
I’m not joking around when I say this is such an easy apple crispy recipe. I also think this is much tastier than a grocery store bought apple crisp.
All you have to do is halve an apple. If you decide to only use half the apple then I suggest using lemon juice on the other half to keep it fresh.
Then, using a small ice cream scoop, spoon or pairing knife, scoop out the core and seeds, along with some flesh to form a cavity, big enough to hold the crumble topping.
In a small bowl stir together cinnamon, oats, and maple syrup and add some coconut oil spray to make it all stick together. Air fry the apples in your air fryer basket at 350 degrees F.
You can use aluminum foil to wrap the apples in to reduce the mess it makes, but this step is not necessary. Just like that you’ve got yourself homemade apple crispy for a lower calorie diet.
TIPS AND TRICKS FOR BEST RESULTS
- Choose the Right Apples: Use a mix of sweet and tart apples like Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or Fuji. This combo gives you the perfect balance of flavors in every bite.
- Peel or No Peel: Peeling the apples gives a smoother texture, but if you’re into a more rustic vibe and want to keep some extra fiber, you can leave the skins on.
- Use the Right Dish: Use a small, oven-safe dish that fits in your air fryer. Too big, and it won’t cook evenly. A snug dish ensures the apples and topping cook together perfectly.
- Don’t Overcrowd: Spread the topping evenly over the apples, making sure not to overcrowd the dish. A thin, even layer ensures everything crisps up perfectly without sogginess.
- Check Doneness: Air fry at 350°F for 12-15 minutes, but keep an eye on it. The apples should be tender, and the topping should be golden brown and crisp. If the topping browns too quickly, lower the temperature slightly or cover with foil.
- Add a Nutty Twist: For extra crunch and flavor, mix in chopped nuts like pecans or walnuts into your topping. They toast beautifully in the air fryer and add a satisfying crunch.
- Serve Fresh: Apple crisp is best served warm, straight from the air fryer. For the ultimate treat, top it with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream.
STORING LEFTOVER AIR FRYER APPLE COBBLER
To keep your leftover apple mixture fresh and tasty, store it in an airtight container in the fridge. It will last for up to 3 days.
When you’re ready to enjoy it again, simply reheat it in the air fryer for a few minutes at 350°F to bring back that crispy topping while keeping the apples warm and tender.
You can also microwave it, but the air fryer will give you the best texture!
If you’re freezing it, store the cobbler in a freezer-safe container for up to 3 months. Thaw overnight in the fridge and reheat in the air fryer for best results.
FAQS
HOW TO SERVE AIR FRIED BAKED APPLES?
I like to serve these air-fried baked apples still hot with a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top. Another delicious option is drizzling them with (vegan) salted caramel sauce or topping them with a dollop of coconut whipped cream for an easy dairy-free dessert or sweet snack?
You could also serve these for a light breakfast, topped with some greek yogurt on top or on the side. Sounds like the perfect fall breakfast to me!
If you do not finish your individual servings of air fryer apple crisp you can store them in the fridge in an airtight container for up to 2 days. To reheat, add back to air fryer to achieve that crunchy topping once again.
WHICH ARE THE BEST APPLES TO USE FOR THE WARM APPLE CRISP?
I usually go for apples that are firm and hold their shape during baking but yet are still slightly tender apples. My favorite apples to use in this recipe are Gala, Granny Smith apples, Fuji, Jonagold, Braeburn, Pink Lady, or Honey crisp. They are all great choices.
CAN I ADD OTHER FLAVORS TO THIS CRUMB TOPPING?
Absolutely! Vanilla extract adds depth to the sweet apples, but you can get creative by adding nutmeg, ginger, or even cardamom for new flavor twists in your new recipes.
CAN I BAKE THIS IN A TRADITIONAL OVEN?
Yes! If you don’t have an air fryer, you can make this fruit crisp in the oven. Preheat to 350°F and bake on a baking sheet for about 30-35 minutes until the apples are tender and the topping is golden brown.
