Starbucks Cold Foam Recipe (3 Ingredients, 2 Minutes)
This Starbucks Cold Foam Recipe is the perfect addition to your cold coffees in the hot summer months. It’s sweet, has a creamy texture, and made with simple ingredients to get your morning started on the right foot.

Vanilla sweet cream cold foam is a lightly sweetened, frothy topping made by aerating heavy cream, milk, and vanilla syrup until silky and pourable. Starbucks charges $1โ2 extra to add it to any drink. You can make it at home in 2 minutes for pennies.
No frother? No problem. I’ve made this every way possible โ here’s exactly what works.

Why You’ll Love This Recipe
- 3 ingredients โ heavy cream, milk, vanilla syrup. That’s it.
- Ready in 2 minutes โ faster than the Starbucks drive-through line by a significant margin.
- No special equipment needed โ a mason jar works just as well as a frother.
- Completely customizable โ swap vanilla for caramel, pumpkin spice, lavender, or anything else.
- Saves serious money โ one batch costs about $0.50 at home vs $1โ2 added to every Starbucks order.
Ingredients You’ll Need
(Full measurements are in the recipe card below.)
- Heavy whipping cream โ essential. The fat content in heavy cream is what creates the thick, frothy texture. You can’t swap this for a lighter cream or the foam won’t hold.
- Milk โ 2% is what Starbucks uses and gives the best balance of creaminess and frothiness. Whole milk makes it richer. Nonfat milk makes it lighter and less stable. Oat milk, almond milk, and soy milk all work for a dairy-free version โ oat milk holds foam the best.
- Vanilla simple syrup โ store-bought (Torani, Monin, or Starbucks brand all work great) or homemade. To make your own: combine equal parts sugar and water in a saucepan, heat until dissolved, remove from heat, stir in 1 tsp vanilla extract, and cool completely. Lasts 2โ3 weeks in the fridge.

How to Make Starbucks Sweet Cream Cold Foam
Combine the heavy cream, milk, and vanilla syrup in your vessel of choice. Then froth using one of these methods:
Handheld electric frother (best results): Submerge the frother into the liquid and froth for 20โ30 seconds until the mixture is thick, silky, and has roughly doubled in volume. This is the fastest method and gives the most consistent foam.
Mason jar (no equipment needed): Add all ingredients to a jar, seal tightly, and shake vigorously for 45โ60 seconds. You’ll get a slightly less uniform foam but it works perfectly and requires zero equipment.
French press: Add ingredients to the French press, pump the plunger up and down rapidly for 30โ45 seconds. Great if you already have one.
Blender or immersion blender: Blend on low for 15โ20 seconds. Be careful not to over-blend or you’ll end up with whipped cream instead of pourable cold foam.
Pour immediately over your iced drink. The foam will float on top โ that’s exactly what you want.
Tips for the Best Cold Foam
Don’t over-froth. You want soft, pourable peaks โ not stiff whipped cream. Stop as soon as the mixture thickens and looks silky. Over-fripping turns it into whipped cream, which sinks instead of floats.
Keep everything cold. Cold cream and cold milk froth faster and hold their foam longer. Don’t let your ingredients sit at room temperature before frothing.
Pour it immediately. Cold foam deflates within a few minutes. Make it right before you’re ready to drink โ don’t try to make it ahead.
The ratio matters. More cream = thicker, richer foam. More milk = lighter, airier foam. Play with the ratio until you find what you like.

Flavor Variations
Swap the vanilla syrup for any of these to make a different flavor:
- Sugar-free โ use any sugar-free syrup. The foam still works exactly the same way.an electric milk frother to mix at high speed before making your morning coffee.
- Caramel โ caramel syrup instead of vanilla. Top with an extra caramel drizzle.
- Pumpkin spice โ pumpkin spice syrup (or add 1 tsp pumpkin puree + a pinch of pumpkin pie spice to the vanilla version). Perfect on a cold brew in September.
- Brown sugar cinnamon โ brown sugar syrup + a pinch of cinnamon.
- Lavender โ lavender syrup. Goes beautifully on an oat milk iced latte.
- Hazelnut โ hazelnut syrup. Rich and nutty โ try it on cold brew.
What to Pour It On
This Starbucks cold foam recipe works on basically any cold drink. Some favorites:
- Cold brew coffee โ the classic pairing
- Iced americano or iced espresso
- Iced matcha latte โ swap the vanilla for honey or plain simple syrup
- Iced chai latte โ surprisingly perfect
- Refreshers and fruit drinks โ the Starbucks Pink Drink with cold foam is genuinely excellent
Cold foam is designed for cold drinks only. On hot drinks it melts immediately and loses the texture entirely.
Store the unfrothed sweet cream mixture (cream + milk + syrup, before frothing) in an airtight jar in the fridge for up to 5 days. Froth it fresh each time you’re ready to use it โ never store already-frothed foam, it deflates within minutes.
