Let’s throw it back to a time when your biggest worry was whether your Dunkaroos made it into your lunchbox. That little tub of frosting and crunchy animal crackers? Peak childhood.

Fast forward to now โ€” we still want the fun, just with more protein and less sugar crash. This high protein dunkaroo dip delivers exactly that. It’s creamy, sweet, covered in sprinkles, and packs 43 grams of protein per serving. I made this for the first time on a whim after seeing it everywhere, and I genuinely could not believe how much it tasted like the real thing.

No baking. No blender. One bowl, five minutes, done.

Why You’ll Love This Recipe

  • Kid-friendly and party-ready โ€” great for lunchboxes, snack boards, baby showers, or post-workout treats
  • 5-minute prep โ€” stir everything together in one bowl and you’re done
  • 43 grams of protein per serving โ€” legitimately one of the highest-protein snacks on the blog
  • Tastes like cake batter frosting โ€” not “healthy food that tastes kind of like frosting.” Actually like frosting.
  • 5 simple ingredients โ€” nothing weird, nothing hard to find
  • No raw flour, totally safe to eat โ€” unlike recipes that use raw cake mix, this one is safe straight from the bowl

Ingredients You Need

(Exact measurements are in the recipe card below)

  • Plain Greek yogurt โ€” the creamy, high-protein base. Full-fat gives the richest, most frosting-like texture. 0% works too but will be slightly tangier. Don’t use regular yogurt โ€” it’s too thin.
  • Cake batter protein powder โ€” this is where the birthday cake magic comes from. I use Clean Simple Eats Cake Batter. PEScience Sugar Cookie (code BAILEY) is another great option. Use a flavor you actually enjoy on its own โ€” it really comes through.
  • Vanilla pudding mix (dry) โ€” add it DRY, straight from the packet. Don’t prepare it first. The dry mix thickens the dip and adds sweetness.
  • Vanilla extract + almond extract โ€” this combo is the secret to that real frosting flavor. The almond extract is the one you don’t want to skip.
  • Rainbow sprinkles โ€” fold them in right before serving so the colors stay bright

How To Make It

  1. Add Greek yogurt, protein powder, dry pudding mix, vanilla extract, and almond extract to a medium bowl.
  2. Whisk or stir vigorously until smooth, thick, and fully combined โ€” it should look like frosting.
  3. Fold in rainbow sprinkles, saving a few to sprinkle on top.
  4. Serve immediately, or refrigerate for 10โ€“15 minutes for an even thicker texture.

Tips

Use a protein powder you actually like the taste of. Since it’s a main ingredient, the flavor really comes through. If your protein powder tastes chalky on its own, it’ll taste chalky in the dip.

Add the pudding mix dry. This is important โ€” do not prepare the pudding first. The dry powder is what thickens the dip to that frosting consistency.

Add sprinkles right before serving if you’re making this ahead. Sprinkles bleed color over time โ€” still delicious, just less pretty.

Too thick? Add a teaspoon of milk at a time and stir until you hit your preferred dipping consistency.

Variations

Chocolate version: Swap in chocolate protein powder and top with mini chocolate chips instead of sprinkles. It tastes like chocolate birthday cake frosting.

Dairy-free: Use a thick dairy-free yogurt like Cocojune coconut yogurt. Pair with a plant-based protein powder.

Extra fluffy: Fold in 2 tablespoons of Cool Whip (fully thawed) for a lighter, mousse-like texture.

Strawberry version: Use vanilla protein and fold in a tablespoon of freeze-dried strawberry powder or strawberry jam for a pink, fruity twist.

What To Dip

The classic choice is animal crackers or Teddy Grahams โ€” that’s the full nostalgic Dunkaroo experience. But honestly, this dip is good with just about everything:

  • Animal crackers or Teddy Grahams
  • Graham crackers
  • Vanilla wafers
  • Apple slices
  • Strawberries
  • Banana slices
  • Pretzels (sweet + salty = amazing)
  • Rice cakes

Storage

Store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 days. The dip thickens as it sits โ€” just give it a quick stir before serving. If it gets too thick, add a splash of milk and stir. Add fresh sprinkles before serving if you made it ahead.

FAQs

What protein powder is best for dunkaroo dip? Cake batter or vanilla-flavored protein powder works best. I use Clean Simple Eats Cake Batter โ€” it tastes like the real thing. If you use vanilla, add a little almond extract to get that authentic frosting flavor. Whatever you use, make sure it’s a brand you enjoy on its own.

What can I dip in dunkaroo dip? Animal crackers and Teddy Grahams are the most nostalgic choice. Graham crackers, vanilla wafers, apple slices, strawberries, and pretzels all work great too. Really anything you’d want to dip in frosting.

Can I make dunkaroo dip dairy-free? Yes โ€” swap the Greek yogurt for a thick dairy-free yogurt like Cocojune and use a plant-based protein powder. Same method, same great result.

How long does dunkaroo dip last in the fridge? Up to 4 days in an airtight container. It actually gets better on day 2 as the flavors settle. Stir before serving โ€” it firms up as it chills.

I had high hopes for this recipe, but the taste is nothing like Dunkaroo. I eat a lot of protein powder based recipes, and I wasnโ€™t expecting an exact similarity- but donโ€™t waste your time.
