Smashed Dates Recipe

If you havenโ€™t smashed a date yetโ€ฆ what are we even doing.

This is one of those โ€œwhy does this taste illegal?โ€ snacks. Soft, caramel-y dates pressed flat, filled with creamy peanut butter, dunked or drizzled in melted chocolate, and finished with flaky sea salt. Sweet. Salty. Chewy. Crunchy.

Itโ€™s giving homemade Snickers energyโ€ฆ but way easier. No baking. No complicated steps. Just five minutes and a fridge.

I keep these in the freezer for when the 8pm sweet tooth hits. Dangerous. In the best way.

Simple Ingredients For The Smashed Dates Recipe

You will need the following ingredients listed below to make this viral sweet treat (the exact measurements, nutritional information and full recipe are in the printable recipe card at the bottom of the post):

  • Medjool dates โ€“ Soft and caramel-like. These work best because theyโ€™re large and naturally sticky. If theyโ€™re dry, soak in warm water for 5โ€“10 minutes and pat dry.
  • Peanut butter โ€“ Creamy works best for spreading. Natural peanut butter is great, but any kind you love will work. Swap for almond or cashew butter if needed.
  • Chocolate chips or chopped dark chocolate โ€“ Melted for dipping or drizzling. Dark chocolate balances the sweetness perfectly, but milk chocolate works too.
  • Flaky sea salt โ€“ Donโ€™t skip this. It takes them from good to elite.
  • Optional – peanuts, other nuts of choice, sprinkles, coconut flakes, etc.

How To Make

  1. Slice each date lengthwise and remove the pit if needed. Place on a parchment-lined tray.
  2. Use the bottom of a glass to gently press each date flat into a disc shape.
  3. Spoon a small amount of peanut butter onto each flattened date and spread evenly.
  4. Melt chocolate in the microwave in 20โ€“30 second intervals, stirring between each, until smooth.
  5. Spoon melted chocolate over each date, covering the peanut butter layer. You can fully coat or just drizzle.
  6. Sprinkle a pinch of flaky sea salt over the top while the chocolate is still warm.
  7. Refrigerate for about 20โ€“30 minutes or freeze for 10โ€“15 minutes until set.

Tips And Tricks For Best Results

  • Use room temperature peanut butter so it spreads easily.
  • If your dates are very sticky, lightly oil the bottom of your glass before smashing.
  • Add crushed peanuts on top for crunch.
  • Store in the freezer if you like a firmer, candy-bar texture.
